Hard Disk Mysteriously filling up! (XP)

Hi,

We recently tried out a HP Scanner 3500c Scanner on our P4 PC.
We noticed the PC was hanging when scanning at high res's.

So we reset the PC.
Then we notice that after a few resets, the hard disk was full.
i.e. Before there was 40Gb free & now it's almost full.

We are assuming that the HP Director software is creating some Temporary File when scanning.
And our reset leaves that file on our PC.

Problem is I can't find the file!!
Do you have any clues? Or maybe you've had the same problem?

Thanks,

m.q.

Well I can tell you right now that there is no way your 40GB Hard Drive is full when you had 40GB free before you started scanning. Thats over 40,000 MB of data. It's almost like your whole Hard Drive has been set up for Virtual Memory. Of course I have never heard of such a thing happening all by itself. How weird.
Right Click on My Computer, Click Properties, Click Advanced, Under Performance Click Settings, Click Advanced and tell me how many MB it shows it's useing of Virtual Memory. See where mine says 1800MB. Thats the number I'm looking for.

You could SEARCH the hard drive for BIG files and/or date specific. Probably in the user profile of whomever was logged on at the time(s) of all the reset(s).....

Check out your system restore settings. You can check how many restore points you have by going to the control panel and starting a restore. You can then look at the calendar and see how many are there. Then to adjust the amount of disk used (and therby reducing the number of restore points) , right click MY computer. Then select properties. Click on the system restore tab. Use the slider to adjust the size to something less than the default.

. Before there was 40Gb free & now it's almost full.

Guys he said he had almost 40GB free before he tried to scan. How in the world could he fill up 40,000 MB of Hard Drive while Scanning. I mean thats alot of scanning. How many documents would it take to fill up 40 GB of space. Also that would sure be alot of restore points. I am very confused.
Are you sure you mean 40GB? Could you give us a screenshot of that?

Cowboy, he doesn't say how MANY times they hit reset and if the scanner was set to a very high resolution, the "temporary" files due to aborting, could be HUGE. That's the reason I told him to look on his hard drive to see what he can find. Knowing MUSAB, we may never hear back from him!

OH. OK, I really have never run into that situation before. Then again I hardly ever scan anything. Earth to MUSAB, are you there. Come in MUSAB. Houston we have a problem. MUSAB has no more room on his Hard Drive and he has run out of fuel.

Re: Hard Disk Mysteriously filling up! (XP)

I recently had a similar problem. I looked around and found not one, but thousands of files that were 14,649KB (14 meg) each with really strange names. The were in several subdirectories of the directory named:

C:WINNTtwain_32fjscanfcpa

I deleted that directory, and it did not seem to cause any problems.

However, I just looked, and there seem to be a number of new files now in this directory with names like:

"Ah My Goddess_CD1.part01.rar"
"Ah My Goddess_CD1.part01.saf"
"Ah My Goddess_CD1.part02.rar"
"Ah My Goddess_CD1.part03.rar"

Does anyone know where these files could be comming from?

Downloaded files of: Ah! My Goddess And Ah! My Goddess Wallpaper Like the one below.
Ah! My Goddess is about the relationship between Morisato Keiichi, a student at Nekomi Institute of Technology (NIT) and the goddess Belldandy. The two are brought together after Keiichi got hungry one evening, and called out for some food. He dialed the wrong number and got the Relief Goddess Office by accident. From out of the mirror appears Belldandy, offering to grant Keiichi one wish "no matter what it is...".

Keiichi, anxious over his difficulties in getting a girlfriend - he's a little short - wishes for someone to stay with him forever. Someone just like her. Belldandy innocently interprets this as Keiichi wishing for her to stay with him forever. Unfortunately, Keiichi lives in a men-only dorm, so he got thrown out when his sempai returned. Eventually he and Belldandy settle for an old temple...

The show develops from this point, introducing more characters and generally being a very sweet and romantic, and often funny, anime.

Hi, Legare ~

I found an entry in my registry for that and it refers to a screensaver I use replacing the original XP 'Logon.scr'.

Hello Musab--

1) Look at Add/Remove and sort by size. It may not ID the phenomenon of scan aborts Al pointed out, or some of the other large download possibilities the guys referenced, but it can be a screener for large files.

2) For more detailed information on exact sizes of files, and subfiles, try good 'ole DX Hoghunt from the people at Development Expertise combining the best in potbellied hog hunting with .net. You can specify and have it search any file or folder or drive--any of the realestate subdivisions on your hard drive.
_______________________________________ __________________________

Development Expertise proudly presents the new version of DX HogHunt - the Disk Hog Hunter! This utility facilitates hunting down those large folders that crowd your hard disk. It was previously written using Visual Basic .NET, but has been completely rewritten in C#, and makes full use of the .NET Framework. This results in a noticable speed increase while reading from disk. The user interface was beefed up and now supports reading the contents of the disk in a background thread. It's small, it's handy - it's Hog Hunt!
_______________________________________ __________________________

You also will acquire their unique Hog icon suitable for placement on your desktop and become the envy of the neighborhood.

A Restore point could take lots of space.
several restore points could fill up the partition in which the OS lives, assuming the 40GB is divided into more than 1 partition.

As somebody else has suggested, use Search to find ALL files created in the past day or so, then sort by size.

Well, .rar is not the extension for a screen saver, and there were about 15 of these files each 14meg. They are also just showing up in this twain_32 directory under my windows directory.

Hi, Legare ~

The extension '.rar' is an archive file like '.zip', '.tar' or '.sit' and is how the screensaver was downloaded, but certainly not 14MB. Do you have access, Legare, to a server to which you may upload one of these?

Is there a place where this thread could be nominated for the weirdest one in Woody's Lounge?
