Explorer page fault errors

The following error message comes up each time I boot my machine. It happened right after I loaded Internet Explorer 5.5 on to the system. The next day when I started the computer this error message popped up.

Explorer caused an invalid page fault in
module explorer.exe

I have extracted a new copy of explorer.exe from the windows 98 disk (as suggested by MS tech suppport)several times but I still get the same message.

I have tried to use safe mode but I either get a message that himem.sys is missing (I've reloaded that too) or when it does boot after disabling all Norton references in the step by step startup mode, I get the same error message in safe mode as in regular mode.

My system is a Cryix 300 system with a 10 gig hard drive and 128 meg of ram. It is networked (ethernet) and has a CD-burner and zip drive added. The trouble started after installing IE 5.5.

Is there a way to fix this mess without reinstalling Windows and reloading all my other programs?

Re: Explorer page fault errors

Hmm.. Hmm..

Given the steps you've taken, I believe I would burn it down and start all over again. (When I use my computer regularly, I do this once a month at least)

You might try defrag or scandisk, or perhaps a registry cleaner, Found here, in Software Finds Those are last ditch efforts to resolve the problem, sounds like re-install time...

Good luck!

System fixed

Well I was ready to reload windows 98 when my son-in-law came home over the weekend and got out the book by Woody,et al, on win 98 and found the chapter on how the registry is backed up each time the thing is used. So we made a copy of the last good registry from the c:windowsxxx directory to a floppy and then reloaded win98.
The machine then started OK but was somewhat buggy. So he loaded the backup of the previous registry and everything worked fine without reloading any programs.
I am now reading the win98 book from cover to cover.
