Table of Authorities in Legal Pleadings (Word 2002)

Can anyone explain the sort order when generating a Table of Authorities in a legal pleading? In a list of statutes, Code of Civil Procedure section 1008 appears before Code of Civil Procedure section 128. Is there a way to specify the correct sort order?

Sounds like "alphabetical": 10xxxxx comes before 12xxx. I don't know if there is an "intelligent" fix for this; the "quick and dirty" fix is to convert the table to text ("unlink the field") and re-sort it manually.

Actually, it's not a real Word "table." "Table of Authorities" is the name of a document listing all of the authorities cited in a court pleading (i.e., cases, statutes, treatises, other authorities, etc.). It is compiled from codes used to mark the various authorities. I'm not sure how to "unlink the fields" as you mention. I've attached a copy of the actual list generated by Word so you can see what I mean.

To convert the field to text, click anywhere in it and press Ctrl+Shift+F9.

    P.S. I'm a lawyer. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15> I feel your pain.

Re: Table of Authorities in Legal Pleadings (Word

I think you can unlink (select the table & Ctrl+Shift+F9) & then sort in groups. First sort everything as text so that e.g.

    CCP 1008
    CCP 128
    PC 11
    PC 28

Then just sort the CCP ones & choose by "number" in the dialog box, rather than by text. Then do the same for PC, etc.
    Cheers,
