    Cannot open document (2002 SP-2)

    Hello,

All of a sudden, I cannot open the attached Microsoft Word document, which is important since it contains a paper of mine with a lot of notes.

Word 2002 SP-2 gives me the following message:

The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions:

    * Check the file permissions for the document or drive.

    * Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.

Can you open the document? If so, can you send me the entire content via e-mail?

And do you know why this problem occurs?

    Thanks so much!

I can't open the document in Word as a document, but I can open it in WordPad, and also in Word if I select the "Retrieve text from any document" option in the File Type dropdown list in File/Open... I don't know what happened and I don'tr know if it is complete.

I have saved the doc from WordPad as an RTF file and attached it.

    Hans,

Thank you so much; you've done me a tremendous service!

    Strange, though, huh?

    Best,

I guess the document has become corrupted slightly in the "meta-information" part. WordPad doesn't use all the features Word has, so it does not notice the corruption. But that is just speculation...

I opened it in StarOffice 6.0, then saved again as a Word doc. It opens in Word, but I don't know how much you might have lost in the process.

Addendum: OpenOffice.org is the same product but you have to download it and print your own documentation. Handy thing to have around for things like this. Just be careful when installing NOT to change all your file extension associations unless you really want to do that.

(Edited by HansV to activate link.)

We recently observed this same problem. There is a Microsoft KB article indicating that this is related to smart tags. See <!mskb=328100>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 328100<!/mskb> ("The document name or path is not valid error message when you open a document"). It was posted on April 17.

    Hello,
i just want to mention that I know of a similar problem solved by the same solution: OpenOffice.
After several mails back and forth about a number Word files which couldn't be opened at a collegue's pc while they opened perfectly at mine as well on-line in our document management system, her IT-dep. installed OpenOffice. Problem solved... The IT-people mentioned something about an Office 97 problem, but as I read here, it's more than that <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>. Useful information!
