contents of C:\temp folder (XP Pro SP1)

I have come across some subfolders in the C:temp folder which I do not recognise. They date back to 2001, and I suspect might be old downloads which are no longer needed. Is it safe to delete the files?
    Many thanks

It looks like a software installation kit for software from abbyy, did you ever install their FineReader OCR software?

    Hi, Dianne ~

If everything you downloaded or set up to be installed is installed, you can delete everything in your C:temp directory.

The XP 'temp' folder is just that - a temporary repository for transient files that are saved and then abandoned as a result of various Windows and applications functions.

After you've cleaned up your folders, it's a good idea to run the XP Disk Defragmenter 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Accessories' > 'System Tools' > 'Disk Defragmenter' which will pack all the scattered bits from the files on your hard disk into tight groups of files. This will generally make XP and your applications run more smoothly.

Thanks Stuart- I think the files were an update for a previous version of ABBYY Fine Reader. This temp file survived the in place upgrade from Windows Me to XP over a year ago. Shows how little I explore the innards of the C drive!

    Hello again Bruce
As you can see from my reply to Stuart, an archaeological dig into the hard drive finds some long-past remnants. Thank you for the reassuring explanation. Will let Diskeeper take care of the cleanup after I send them to oblivion.
    Regards
    Dianne
