    Changing Hyperlinked Picture Association (Any)

    In XL97 a hyperlinked jpg or gif files opens "photoeditor" and a tif opens "imaging for windows" no matter what program is ASSOCIATED with the images in Windows

    In xl2000 jpg/gif open with IE.

    Is there a way to change what program is opened from the hyperlink of an image?

    I have played around trying to find it and it is either:
    1) Not possible
    2) involves some kind of registry hack
    3) so obvious that I can't find it

    Thanks,
    Steve

    In my XL2000, they open as in your XL97......

    I love consistency!

    It might deal also with the Windows version.

    I tried it on XL2000 with Win XP on my brother's computer (I was visiting over the weekend). It might be that he does NOT have PhotoEditor installed (I didn't check).

    Steave

    Are you tried through Windows Explorer?

    1.- Open your Windows Explorer.
    2.- Select any jpg file
    3.- Right click of the mouse and select "Open with..." |

    Yes. This was the first thing I chacked. I assumed excel would OPEN a hyperlinked file in whatever program WINDOWS has associated with it. This is NOT true.

    As I stated:
    <hr>In XL97 a hyperlinked jpg or gif files opens "photoeditor" and a tif opens "imaging for windows" no matter what program is ASSOCIATED with the images in Windows<hr>

    Hi Steve.

    Is this any use?

    Change the program that starts when you open a file -
    Many file types in Windows are registered to be opened by a particular program. For example, Notepad starts when you double-click a text document file. You can change the program that starts when you open a file.

    In My Computer or Windows Explorer, click Options on the View menu (or click Folder Options in Microsoft Windows 2000).

    Click the File Types tab.

    In the Registered file types list, click the file type you want to open with a different program.

    Click Edit.

    Click Edit again.

    In the Application used to perform action box, type the path to the program you want to use to open files of the selected file type. Or, click Browse to select the path from a folder list.
    Note Not all registered file types have an open action.

    Re: Changing Hyperlinked Picture Association (Any)

    This is essentially the same suggestion of Servando.

    It DOES NOT matter what I tell windows to open it with, EXCEL opens it with what I mentioned. I can have jpg open with PAINT. When I dbl-click the files in Windows Explorer, paint will open and open the file.

    BUT,
    when you hyperlink a jpg file in Excel, it will be opened by PhotoEditor in XL97!

    I can change the associations all I want in WINDOWS but EXCEL seems to have its OWN settings, but I don't know where they are located.

    Re: Changing Hyperlinked Picture Association (Any)

    FWIW on my system (OfficeXP / WinXP Home), the following applies:

    Hyperlink opens Associated Program
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~
    BMP Adobe PhotoDelux Adobe PhotoDelux
    GIF IE Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
    JPEG IE Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
    PNG Adobe PhotoDelux Adobe PhotoDelux
    TIFF Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
    Looks like IE is set up to "capture" JPG & GIF (the two most common picture file types?)
    Interestingly, in opening from the Excel Hyperlink, MS Office cautioned about potential viruses etc, only for the PNG file (not like open formats?).
    Re: Changing Hyperlinked Picture Association (Any)
    Oops - obviously this system does not like blank spaces used to set out a table. I'll try again
    .............................. Hyperlink opens ......................................... Associated Program
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    BMP .................... Adobe PhotoDelux ..................................... Adobe PhotoDelux
    GIF ...................... IE .................................................. ................. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
    JPEG .................. IE .................................................. ................. Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
    PNG .................... Adobe PhotoDelux ..................................... Adobe PhotoDelux
    TIFF ..................... Windows Picture and Fax Viewer ........... Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

    Very strange. This is what I get with Windows XP Home and Excel 2002:

    <table border=1><td>Extension</td><td>Open from Explorer</td><td>Associated App</td><td>Hyperlink Opens</td><td>.bmp</td><td>Windows Picture Viewer</td><td>Windows Picture viewer</td><td>Paint</td><td>.gif, .jpg, .png</td><td>Windows Picture Viewer</td><td>MS Photo Editor</td><td>MS Photo Editor</td></table>

    I suspect that if you change the TIFF to Associate a different program (photoeditor or paint) it will STILL open picture and fax viewer

    I am more confused by your table:
    Gif, png, and jpg are associated with Photoeditor but in explorer they open Picture viewer? To me this is even more weird.

    Yes, it's very odd. If even Windows Explorer doesn't respect the associations <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>. Apparently, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer cuts in at a very low level.

    Wanna be more confused? Paint is associated with Editing a .bmp, but Excel starts Paint to open a hyperlink to a .bmp.

    Re: Changing Hyperlinked Picture Association (Any)

    No.

    I just changed the Association to Photoshop & it opens in Photoshop from both Windows Explorer and from the Hyperlink in Excel (2002).

    I have never noticed the behaviour described by HansV. On my system (very similar to his), files open in their associated program when accessed from Windows Explorer.

    AFAIK I do not have MS Photo Editor. Is this a separate program? Not that I want it. Quite happy with Photoshop for editting & with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer for quick viewing. The PhotoDeluxe thing is an anomaly, reflecting the fact that I rarely if ever bother with BMP files. The program came with my scanner & grabbed the extensions when it was installed.
