    Office XP Pro? (a2k (9.0.3821) SR-1 Jet 4.0)

    I develop in A2k.

Customer has Office XP Pro installed

    Questions:

    1. Can I continue to develop in A2k, deliver by modem front-end db and convert to Office XP Pro for distribution and use on their client computers?

    2. Can I leave the backend db in A2k?

    3. What version of Office XP Pro should I be working with?

    4. What other question and considerations should I be aware of?

    Thanks, John

    Hi John,

Access 2002 (XP) can work with Access 2000 databases without any conversion - in fact, the A2000 format is the default database format in A2002.

So you can keep on developing in Access 2000, and you don't need to convert the frontend or the backend for distribution. You won't be able to use any of the new features in Access 2002, but that has the advantage that you'll be able to use the databases in a mixed 2000/2002 environment.

There aren't really very many new features in Access 2002, so you can stick with 2000 if you wish. The features that are missing from 2000 are some nice new report features (like OpenArgs and an exposed Recordset property) but you can live without them easily enough. Your XP clients won't notice the difference at all. And it's actually safer to develop in 2000 for XP than the other way around. Sometimes an XP database won't open in 2000 even though it should. I don't know of any instances of the opposite problem.

    Hi Charlotte & Hans

    Thanks for the great information.

    3. What version/release/SR/SP of Office XP Pro should my customer be working with?

    Thanks, John

The current version is SP-2. It has been largely endorsed by Woody (see http://www.woodyswatch.com/office/ar...ate.asp?v7-n41), so that's the version your customer should have.

I have SP 2 installed on my office machine and on the stand alone version of Access on my laptop, and I haven't had any problems with that version.
