    mscvrt32.exe

    Any suggestions please.

I have 2 occurences of this file running in "Start-up" reached via MSCONFIG. There is no reference to it in the archives here, and Google only shows 2 answers neither of which help.

It is labelled Microsoft Cvrt, and while the MS KB brings back a page full of answers, none of them seem to be about this file, although I have not read them all.

I would have assumed that if it was a virus, it would have shown up in Symantec/McAfee somewhere.

    Any ideas what it does?

Not necessarily a safe assumption - it is not unknown for a virus to disable certain AV software....

What happens if you de-select them in MSConfig to stop them starting?
Where is the file located on your HD?
Run a search in your registry and see where it pops up.

I have done a search and can not find a virus with that name. That does mean it's not one , I just can't find one with that name. I would try what Leif said and do a search of files by that name and see what it leads you to.

I don't know this particular file, but most things starting MSVCRT are Microsoft C Run Time Library support files. (I think the V is from the old Visual C name).

Sorry I phrased that poorly. I meant that I would have thought that Google would have found a reference to the file on th Symantec/McAFee web sites if it was a virus. Not that I would have been guaranteed to find it on my own PC with the virus scanner.

I've just disabled the two entries in MSConfig, and as yet I haven't spotted a difference. Incidentally, I did check, and they were not re-instated on the re-boot.

    The file is in c:WindowsSystem.

There is no entry in the Registry (other than the Start-Up ones which are disabled)

This file is actually Mscvrt32.exe not Msvcrt32.exe. Don't know if that makes adifference
