    Uninstall the Uninstallable

What is the best way to get rid of applications that refuse to uninstall themselves. I have two such programs. Norton Antivirus and Nero Burning ROM. Both apps function as they should except they won't uninstall.

    Re: Uninstall the Uninstallable

Do you mean they won't uninstall from Add/Remove Programs? I have had to do a repair install on programs before to where I could an uninstall, because they were missing the proper uninstall files. Also sometimes if you put the CD in and run it , it will ask you if you want to Install, repair or remove. And you just click remove.

<img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Hi Bill, NAV (Norton Anti Virus) comes with its own uninstall program, but as Cowboy says uninstall using the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. I imagine Nero would be the same, thought I dont use it. Good Luck.

Don't know about Nero, but you might look at this:

How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility

"The utility should be used only when you cannot uninstall through the Add/Remove Programs applet."

    Re: Uninstall the Uninstallable

That's right. They will not uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs. How do you do a repair install? I tried reinstalling "on top of" the existing install. The install wizard wouldn't allow it saying something like "...install was interrupted before completion. No changes were made..." Neither CD has an uninstall routine that I can see. If you have any other ideas I would sure like to hear from you again.
    Thanks

    Re: Uninstall the Uninstallable

I checked the CDs for both programs and neither offered an uninstall program. The NAV I have installed is the corporate version. It seems to be different in several ways. For instance, Norton has an antivirus removal utility but the directions state that it is not to be used for the corporate edition.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

    Re: Uninstall the Uninstallable

I was almost cheering when I read the title. Then I read about half way down the page where it says "this utility must not be used to uninstall Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition". Guess what I have. There is another Symantec document I found on the subject saying that Symantec is aware of the problem and will update the document when a solution is found. They go on to suggest procedures to check, change, and remove stuff in the registry. I'm not comfortable with that. The document also mentions "Troubleshooting Windows Installer Engine Problems" and "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility". Anybody know anything about these?
I would appreciate any other ideas you have,
    Thanks
    Bill
