Removing Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493 (Version 5.1, SP1)

In the latest Woody's Windows XP newsletter, there are instructions for removing this hotfix. My particular dilemma is that, while every other program and hotfix in Add/Remove programs has a Remove button, when I highlight Windows XP Hotfix (SP) Q811493, there is no Remove button at all. Any suggestions for how I should remove it?

You may have to remove it with REGEDIT.

See my recent <post#=247433>post 247433</post#> There is a warning about not being able to remove it when you are about to download it. I installed it and was I sorry !
But System Restore or GoBack will also get rid of it.

Yeah, I never thought about system restore. That should work.

Re: Removing Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493 (Version 5.1, SP1)

I am new here, so I hope I am doing this right. Got the recent newsletter, but can's find Windows XP Hotfix Q81493 on my computer. I DO find Windows XP Hotfix Q811493 on my computer and HAVE noticed performance problems since that and the accompanying fixes were downloaded. Is this the one that is causing all of the problems? If so, what happens if I remove it in accordance with the newsletter instructions? Any downside? Should I remove it with System Restore? Thanks for your help.

Yes Q811493 is the one, and no it's not going to hurt anything. To remove it go to Add&Remove Programs and remove it from there. Useing System Restore is only if you can't find it in Add&Remove Programs. Add&Remove is in Control Panel. If you can't remove it from there go to System Restore and Restore to an earlier date. Just go back to the day before you installed it. Warning, you won't lose any Documents or Settings but you will lose any new programs you loaded between now and the date you go back to. If you haven't loaded any new programs, don't worry about it. But 1st try Add&Remove Programs.

Thanks cowboy! Removed it without any problem and now my speed is back. Didn't know what happened until I read the newsletter and then it all made sense. Thanks also to Woody, where ever he is.

Re: Removing Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493 (Version 5.1, SP1)

Are the hotfixes listed in Add/Remove in the order they were applied?

IOW, after Hotfix Q811493, I have Hotfix 814033 and Windows XP Service Pack 1A. If I do a system restore, am I going to lose the hotfixes and service pack install that came after?

And I didn't really want to have to do a system restore. Is that really, really, *really* my only option?

Thanks, all.

Oops! I think I may have answered my own question.

Has anybody here ever had problems using spuninst.exe? I notice though, that I have two entries for Q811493. They are:

$NtUninstallQ811493$
$NtUninstallQ811493_RTM$

Can anyone tell me the difference and do I uninstall both entries?

Again, thanks for your replies.

One last thing...does the order matter?

Thanks,

No, The order shouldn't matter, just remove them both.

Re: Removing Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493 (Version 5.1, SP1)

Can you please help me with another aspect of this problem? I was also burned by the 330994 patch for Outlook Express as well. Does anyone know which Windows XP Hotfix I should remove to remedy this situation? I already removed the hotfix associated with Q81439, but I cannot figure out which one I should remove to resolve the problems I'm having with OE.

Thanks,
Simon

Re: Removing Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q81493 (Version 5.1, SP1)

Hello - just discovered your forum - I have this hot fix you are all talking about and have also been running slowly this last week or so .. so I gather it is this that is causing the problem and its best to remove it ..?

Thing is I also have Q814033, which came after the Q811493, I had thought that one was a fix for the other so is it best to get rid of both or just the Q811493??

Simon,
Look in control panel|addremove programs for the hot fix number. highlight and click remove Q330994, if you feel that was the one you were burned with.

A good utility to use for lots of information on your system as well as status of hotfixes is Belarc Advisor. Get it at http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html. It will show which hotfixes are installed and if they were installed correctly or need to be done over.
