Can't remove watermark (XP)

I added a "draft" watermark to a document we're working on. Work's done now, and we're ready to print a real copy. Trouble is, I can't get the watermark to go away. The watermark is in the background--96 point, light gray, diagonal. Help says just click on Format > Background > Printed Watermark and click on "No watermark." Done that, but the *&%$# thing's still there! I've closed and reopened the document; I've closed and reopened Word. What else?

Try View > Header and Footer and see if you can select and delete the watermark.

    Yup! That worked!

Now, why in blue blazes does a watermark have anything to do with a Header/Footer? And since it does, why doesn't Help mention that?

Oh, well.... Stuart, thanks a bunch!

A watermark is an element that is repeated on every page, just like page headers and footers, so they are a reasonable place to put a watermark.

The online help mentioned the link between watermark and header/footer in older versions of Word, but MS probably decided that it was too confusing to users, so they created a menu item for it, and removed the explanation from the help. Now this is confusing users ...
