    XP Home & patches/updates/hotfixes (Home with SP1)

I just installed XP Home on my first built-from-scratch p/c. According to Microsoft there are 14 XP updates, 19 critical updates and 3 driver updates. According to Woody it's not always a good idea to download all of these updates. Where can I found reference material that will help me decide which of these updates are necessary and which should be avoided? I did the 3 driver updates so I only have 36 updates left to review. I've installed ALL of the updates & patches available to date and they have all worked fine, EXCEPT a current one (Q811493) that did a number on the performance/speed of my system. There was even a warning on this one from Woody but I got it after I had already installed it and BOY did it slow things down. When I clicked on an icon for instance, it would take 5 -10 seconds to respond and load. After loading the prog ran OK but the wait was terrible. The only way out of it was to do a system restore to an earlier point before installing the "fix". Everything is fine after that.

I think the key for you is to install one at a time, then make sure everything seems to run OK, then go for another one. There are some on the lounge who advocate waiting a week or so before installing a hotfix, to make sure there are no hidden problems. Some also don't install ANY of them ! It's dealers choice on this. I prefer going for all, as long as I have the ability to "GoBack" if need be. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

I would not recommend in future installing the driver updates from the Microsoft Windows Update site. At times they can be incorrect versions for your hardware and at other times they are not needed, a sort of a false positive. Right now Windows Update says I need I new driver for my Samsung 19" monitor: WRONG I have checked several times on the Samsung website and my driver is the most recent.

I go to the website of the company that made the hardware and download the driver software directly from their site.
