Hard Disk Access Dissapears after Windows Reinstal (Windows XP Home)

I've experienced this problem a couple of times.

I have two hard disks both same make size etc.

First time I installed Windows I've Partioned and FOrmatted them both to NTFS. Installed Windows XP on the Primary etc. No problems. The Second hard disk has the drive letter D: assigned to it and I use it to store personal data (music etc)
This worked well for months.

Windows had a problem and I reinstalled.

Everything appeared to work - BUT no secondary drive. Device manager shows the drive is there. Computer Manager shows the drive's label but I have NO access. No drive letter is assigned to it and I can't access the data on it!

The only way I can get access this hard disk is to re partition it and lose all of it's data - Not an ideal situation.
I assume this has something to do with permissions on NTFS? If I can plug a FAT32 drive in and it gets a Drive latter - Why not NTFS?

Help please.

Thanks

In Computer Management, what if you try to ASSIGN a drive letter to it, will that do anything?

"The volume you have specified is not valid, or does not exist"

This second hard disk IS FINE. The data on it was perfect. I had to reinstall Windows on another Hard disk (Primary Master) and now this slave disk (Which appears in the BIOS and Computer Management) will not take a drive letter.
It's reported as NTFS and Healthy(Active). The amount of space left reported in Computer Management is correct too.
No drive letter.
Assign won't work.

If I right click on this drive in Computer Management the ONLY option I get is Delete Partition...
Change Drive letter etc is greyed out.

Does this ring a bell with anybody?

Do you have a zip drive connected to your computer?

Re: Hard Disk Access Dissapears after Windows Rein

No. No ZIP drive. Basic bare bones PC.
I can recreate this condition on ANY PC....

The best way to describe what I'm experiencing is to do the following:

Build a PC with two identical hard disks. Master and Slave.
Format and Partition both hard disks (NTFS) and install WIndows. THe master is C: the slave is d:
Put LOTS of important files on D:

Now stick in your Windows disk and re install Windows on Drive C:
Once Windows is installed the Slave (What was drive letter D: ) is no longer accesable.
Computer Management knows there is a gard disk there - BUT will not assign a drive letter to it.
If the slave was FAT32 - There is no problem. The drive would be accesable. (And be given a letter of D: - Not that that actual letter it get's is important... More the fact that it get's a lettter.)

I'm assuming therefore it's something to do with NTFS? Maybe security issues? Permissions? Sharing of the Partition?!?

Help is always welcome.

Have you tried accessing the D drive using the Command Prompt ?? I'm not sure that's an option with NTFS but, if you can get the files to show in DOS, then you should be able to copy them over to the C drive.

Strictly an un-educated guess here !! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

1.) Is the disk setup as a basic or dynamic drive? 2.) Are you doing this logged in as a user that is an administrator?

Re: Hard Disk Access Dissapears after Windows Reinstal (Windows XP Home)

Logged in using the Admin account. Not a user with Admin rights.

If I use DOS I have no way of 'locating' the drive - No drive letter to get in to.

If I use recovery console I'm told that I don't have rights to view that folder. (?? - I'm in as Admin)

Is there any way that NTFS might have locked this drive - The computer name has changed when WIndows was reinstalled and I'm suspicious that this second drive is now locked to me because it doen't recognise the permissions?
Logged in as Admin I don't know how to affect this drives permissions without first getting a drice letter assigned to it (Which I can't do)

Frustrating.

- Although I swear I'm not going to give in this time and re format!!

Re: Hard Disk Access Dissapears after Windows Reinstal (Windows XP Home)

I kinda thought that you wouldn't be able to see the drive using DOS, but it was worth a look. You said you can see it in Computer Manager but not in Windows. What is it called when you can see it ??
I did some poking around and came up with this site. There seem to be several different ways to approach this problem and this site offers several options. I wouldn't be eager to reformat and lose that data just yet either.

Re: Hard Disk Access Dissapears after Windows Reinstal (Windows XP Home)

If I view the drive in Computer Management it's simply Disk 01 (with the Primary master called Disk 00) although it does read the disks volume label "moon" correctly.

Thanks for the links - I'll take a look around.

If I have any joy I'll post back. Doc Watson - Thanks, those links have given me some more enthusiasm that I might be able to solve this yet.
