    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

The word processor in the MS Works Suite is Microsoft Word, so that shouldn't be a problem.
If you mean a spreadsheet-type file, you're probably out of luck: Excel can only open Works files created in MS Works version 2 or earlier. The only workaround is to find somebody else who has MS Works and have him/her convert the files.

If you want more assistance from the Lounge, please tell us:
    1. What version of MS Works did you have before you uninstalled it?
    2. What version of MS Office do you have (XP, 2000, 97, 95)?
    3. What kind of MS Works files do you want to open?

I received a file that they said was created using Works - it has a .wps extension but when I try to open it with Word, I get all gibberish.

Is that the extension that Works normally uses?

.wps is the standard extension for a Works word processor document.
When you select File | Open... in Word, is the file type perhaps set to Recover text from any document? If so, try selecting one of the Works types (Works 2000 or Works 4) from the dropdown list; then open the document again.

The Works choices I find are "Works 4.0 for Windows" and "Works for Windows 3.0" -- both give me gibberish again.
I did try the "recover text from any file" and then I can see the text but no formatting.
Is there a way that she can do a "save as" in Works and save it as a Word document?

The Works word processor should be able to Save As a Word document; which versions depends on the Works version, and also as .RTF, a format that conserves formatting and can be read by Word.
