Others have more knowledge of this, but here is my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>: are you logged in as a user with administrator rights when you do this?

Select Start | Control Panel | User Accounts. Here, you can see what kind of user you are.

Sunday is a quiet day in the Lounge, but if you wait a bit, I'm sure that some of the Windows experts will get online; they will be able to help you better than I can. Good luck.

Re: SP1 TROUBLE (WINDOWS XP HOME)

    Bobby--

Did an error search on installing SP1 Access Denied. Also googled around including lots of SP1 google group threads and reread 25 or so SP1 installation KB's and found nothing specific. You'll hopefully get some more suggestions on this thread, but here's what I'd do.

Many people don't realize they have free Microsoft Support on service pack installation issues be it Windows or Office and I'd rate it pretty high on the tech support scale. They will make a good effort to get you installed, and they do have access to issues and in house preliminary KB's that we don't have. Call 1800 936 5700 Press 2--Don't worry about paid support messages--that doesn't mean service pack install problems. They're on Pacific Time US. Close 12 Eastern weekdays; earlier weekends.

    Also see:
329261: Service Pack 1 Setup Cancelled. This shows you how to view the SP1 installation log. According to this KB, some anti-spy programs may interfere with installation of SP1 although I haven't seen this.

815319: Windows XP SP1 Installation Stops Responding--this involves a USB mouse or keyboard attached. I wouldn't worry about the interesting 34 minutes in the title. Statistically a huge percent if not most installations of SP1 have probably involved a USB mouse or keyboard or both. May be worth trying. Also if by chance you are using the third party Boot XP Utility, (used to make 300 interesting start up screens) it can block SP1 installation, and it's a known issue and you'll get Error Message: Windows Has Detected that One or More Protected Core System Files (Kernel) Has Been Modified.

I had to uninstall it and it downloaded fine. These applications reconfigure the kernel. I didn't know it; now I do.

When you get it in; please post what you did to do it. Wish I could be more help. Good luck.

    Bobby,
Even though it is a huge download you may want to download the network install. It is the full SP-1 rather than what the installer determines you need. That way you can save it and have a copy in case you end up having to try several monre iterations of installation.

Re: SP1 TROUBLE (WINDOWS XP HOME)

Bobby you get the network install from the hyperlink on the right Windows XP SP1a Network Installation--SP1a is fine--and that's a very good idea to try--whatever is in your way with the express install may well not stop the download of the network install which is larger in case it has to be used for multiple machines. It will work fine if you get it in.
Other SP1 info is available on that page--including list of fixes-- 300 plus.
