Crash on carriage return (OE6 SP1)

Has anyone experienced OE consistently crashing after hitting 'Enter' as carriage return or upon switching folders <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

System is defragged and only 500KB total in OE messages.

Bruce,
I have never had that type of problem and it looks like others haven't either. Do you get the BSOD or seize up or what? Is it only in OE? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

Hi, Bob ~

No seize, no BSOD, no problem anywhere other than OE. No error messages other than the generic 'encountered a problem and will now close' notice. 'OK' is only option & then it just closes and I reopen & start over. Only OE & inconsistently only after hitting 'Enter' or switching folders.

Hi Bruce,
Didn't come up with much, except that msimn.exe is OE's executable. With that in mind maybe a reinstall of OE? Might be a flaky file in there that gives you the occasional trouble. I know I would rather have something more concrete to go on, but really drew a blank wall checking around.

I tried 'regsvr32 mshtml.dll' at 'Run...' but same behaviour.

Re: Crash on carriage return (OE6 SP1)

Hello, I'm experiencing very similar behaviour, except that I receive no warning message. Outlook Express just disappears. Any message I'm working on is lost. It seems to happen if I press ethe enter key twice in a row. Here are some details of my system:

Windows XP Pro, Pentium 4 2GB, 1 GB Ram, Audigy Ext, Radeon 8500DV videocard, drivers up to date I have plenty of hard disc space and I defrag regularly. I'm also using OE6 SP1.

Should I reinstall OE6. How do I do this?

Thanks, this problem is driving me nuts!

Hi, Chris ~

The closest thing I could find were some of the items listed here.

I had the same problem and it finally seems to have disappeared after installing Outlook Express Update Q330994 and rebuilding all my DBX files.

Thanks Bruce,

I downloaded the update and I'll see what happens. How do I rebuild the DBX files?

Hi, Chris ~

If you have any messages you wish to save, open OE & create a new folder with a name like 'Rebuild' or whatever appeals to you. Move copies of any messages you wish to save into this folder.

<UL><LI>Close OE<LI>Navigate to:
<small>Cocuments and SettingsYour UsernameLocal SettingsApplication DataIdentities{Corresponding Identity}MicrosoftOutlook Express</small><UL><LI>Delete all the folders in that Outlook Express directory except 'Rebuild'<LI>This will rebuild the DBX folders upon next execution of OE<LI>Move your messages from 'Rebuild' back into the appropriate folders and delete 'Rebuild' folder<LI>Open OE > 'Tools' > 'Options...' > 'General' tab<LI>Set OE to open at your 'Inbox', disable send and receive at startup and disable auto logon to Messenger<LI>Regularly compact all folders by 'File' > 'Folders' > 'Compact All Folders'
Re: Crash on carriage return (OE6 SP1)

I can't see the whole error message from the screen shot, but it may have something to do with a damaged/missing mshtml.dll file. A lot of threads point to the update patch 810847 issued February 2003. If you can't make the error happen right now, you can probably get the complete error message from Event Viewer. First see Hitting Enter Key Closes Outlook Express and Outlook Express 6 Error (Scroll to top for all of these threads).
KB 216433 Also see:
MSHTML ERRORS and this thread on OE mshtml errors; a See a second thread here.

The KB isn't on point to the exact error message, but you may try renaming the mshtml.dll file, which is never usually hidden and is part of the System 32 folder, and if it doesn't help restore the original name. You also might want to do a search for the mshtml.dll file, and replace your current one with a new one.And there's always the chance that <font color=blue>System File Checker</font color=blue> will do this for you--running it might help.

Sandi has some mshtml info here on her site, but my understanding from what you screenshot was that this is an OE error linked with the mshtml.dll file.
