    System Fonts Vanished

I use XP & a month-old Viewsonic plasma screen. Software & hardware firewalls. Clean virus scans. I am the ONLY user.

It seems like my Windows fonts went invisible: No desktop shortcut labels. No Explorer filenames. No text in toolbar menus, or Start button/Program features. Text and options are invisible. Drop-down lists expand, but show various white spaces. Unfortunately this is true for most text in Help, Troubleshooting, and Control Panel sections. All icons and shorcuts, or folder symbols are intact, even with flyover labels opening--but with blank 'text' areas.

Most text within applications is fine. In Outlook 2000, unread message titles (bolded by default) appear. Read ones (normal text by default) have a long blank row . Message header info is blank for *open* messages. The message text is OK visible.

I adjusted the following--Refresh Rate, Theme, System Reset to a few days, and a few weeks, before the problem, run a virus scan. Most options are sets of blanks. My browser works OK, but Microsoft Knowledge Base has "invisible fonts" so I can't choose categories.

With a friend on the phone, we succeeded in getting a font to appear in SOME areas (shortcuts, Explorer folders). This was by poking around in the Advanced section of Display Properties (up to that point, the tabs are readable). Beyond that, it's blind again. The bad news is, the only font that seemed to work is a teensy script which is difficult to read--especially, say, in a list of fonts.

Any ideas? I'm wondering if I can reinstall FONTS only, either from my Windows CD or Office 2000? Whatever I do, I would (of course) need to READ the prompts along the way!

What happens if you select a different theme for your desktop's appearance? Also, you could boot with the XP CD-ROM and run an emergency repair, or install right on top of your existing XP installation (an in-place upgrade). I would think one of these three would get you to a "visible" system.

I'd suggest updating the video drivers as well, if you can read the prompts enough to do so - as a first measure.

As Mark said, you can run the setup again and it will install your fonts. See 314960 #2: How To Install or Remove a Font in Windows XP.

Another way from Kelly's XP Korner A-Z under "Fonts":
    <font color=448800>_______________________________________</font color=448800>

    Fonts - Replace All

A font may seem to be installed correctly but does not appear in the Fonts folder because the Fonts key in the registry is missing or damaged.

Move the contents of the Fonts folder to an empty folder. By opening the Fonts folder, select all the fonts, copy them, and paste them to a new folder. Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFonts. Highlight the key and press DELETE. Once the key has been deleted create a new key to replace it, by selecting Edit/New/Key and name the new key [Fonts].

Restart the computer, then re-install the fonts by opening the Control Panel, double-click on 'Fonts'. And from the File menu select 'Install New Fonts...' adding the fonts that were previously copied to the temporary directory.

    <font color=448800>___________________________________________</font color=448800>

Can't figure out what did this to you--in older versions an application like Corel draw that would overload fonts could make them start acting buggy- at 600 on up true type fonts but I'm not sure if there is a font limit in XP.

Speaking of fonts.....just how necessary is it to keep ALL of those fonts shown in the Winfonts folder? I've deleted a few of the really bad looking ones, but would like to trim out more. Any list of the important ones or they considered all important? Curious.

    Re: System Fonts Vanished

Bob, I think you can eradicate most of them. The system fonts, like Marlett and Wingdings, and any other graphical font, I would leave alone. And of course Times New Roman. Microsoft also uses Tahoma and Verdana for various things. Worst case scenario, if you remove one and an application looks squirrely, you can reload it if need be. I've never seen a definitive list anywhere, but I'm guessing that you know what the staples are (arial et al).

    Mark,
Thanks for the info. I think I will start to drop the obvious oddball ones one at a time and of course hang on to the standards. <img src=/S/drop.gif border=0 alt=drop width=23 height=23>

    SMBP,
Thanks for the info in your post. The fonts listed are what I would consider the "standard" ones which I intend to keep, of course. (although I have already dumped wingdings)
The other sites appear to be sources for additional fonts, which is what I am trying to avoid. I want less not more of them, so I guess I'll just do as I said in my prior post, delete one at a time, carefully. You know, live on the edge and all that ! <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

    Re: System Fonts Vanished

I don't know if this is a complete list Mark but in 314960 they list Courier New, Arial, Times New Roman, Symbol, Wingdings, MS Serif, and MS Sans Serif as standard XP installs. Bob-- There are a number of sites to get more info about which fonts somebody might want/need, and Microsoft has a site that lists all the type founderies known to it: Microsoft Foundries.
    Also see sites like: Bitstream
    Agfa/Monotype's

    Re: System Fonts Vanished

Wasn't sure where to post my question, but seems closely related to this thread, and it appears searching is unavailable for a while, so here goes:

I subscribe to a number of Woody's Watches. One, which I get in HTML format, is Windows Watch. The latest issue includes this note: "Typographical Note: If you don't have the Wingdings font installed (and almost all of you will because it's a default in Windows) then will show up as some strange character instead."

In fact, the "" is supposed to be a graphic representing the Windows icon on the Windows key. So clearly I am getting a "strange character". Also, quotation marks and apostrophes appear as a ""

Thing is, I checked my Control Panel and Fonts folder, and I appear to have Wingdings, Wingdings2 and Wingdings3 fonts installed.

So why aren't those characters displaying correctly?

I am running Windows XP Pro.

    Many TIA.

    Re: System Fonts Vanished

Sorry to sound like a newbie, but I don't follow.

I can open any of the 3 windings fonts with Windows Font viewer, it shows a lot of characters at varying font sizes (including the square I'm getting in lieu of the apostrophes and the windows symbol).

    I don't follow your reference to "0x49"

    Thanks

Did you open the Wingdings font using the character map? I found it as the LAST entry using "0x49"

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

What version of Windows are you using?
Also your Wingding fonts may be clobbered, you may need to remove them and reinstall.

    Re: System Fonts Vanished

    Windows XP Pro.

Sorry, I looked at your post again and saw the graphic of Character Map you posted. I found same on my PC, opened the Wingdings font and found the Windows character in exaclty the same spot you did, very end, location 0xFF (same as your graphic appears to show)

If I can view the font and see the same thing you are seeing, maybe the font is not "clobbered" <g>, but something else is going on?

    Thanks again
