I posted on Friday with a problem with a NUMPAGES reference in my header not updating properly. Had a suggestion from one person, but haven't been able to fix the problem.
I searched WOPR and the Internet for NUMPAGES and tried several fixes:
-- I tried using SECTIONPAGES in my header instead of NUMPAGES and got the same result. Nothing happened when the number should have updated, no error messages.
-- I put a bookmark at the end of my document, in a new protected section, and then used a PAGEREF in my header instead of the NUMPAGES field. This did give the desired result with the page numbering. However, the Page Down key in the test document I created is acting very strangely. If I use the mouse to slide down the scroll bar, it works as expected and I scroll from page 1 to the end (page3). If I use the Page Down key to look at my document, I go from page 1 to 2 to 3 to 2 to 3 to 2... in an endless loop!!
This is a new hard drive. I'm running NT 4.0 SP 6 and Word 2002 (10.2627.2625.) Microsoft won't talk to me without a credit card number. Has anyone ever seen the Page Down key go haywire? All other apps seem to be running properly. Our IT people don't want to install a service pack, and I haven't found any Microsoft documentation that *admits* to the first problem, much less the second, or that suggests a service pack has a fix for my problem.
