Optical Drive Testing

I'm hunting for a piece of software that will thoroughly test an optical drive. I have a DVD-ROM that I suspect has issues, as it cannot read discs on occasion. Opening the tray allows the system to resume normal operation, and there are events in the system log that indicate something is awrt. I've ruled out the cable and the onboard IDE controller as suspects. Any recommendations? If it's something that I can boot from a floppy, so much the better - one never knows for certain if the OS has anything to do with it.

    Re: Optical Drive Testing

A quick Google turns up the National institute of Standards and Technology which offers:

NIST Optical Disc Drive Compliance Test
The NIST CD compliance test is designed to test CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives for MultiRead Compliance as specified by the MultiRead specifications developed by OSTA for CD-R and CD-RW discs.

    Re: Optical Drive Testing

Hmmn, I missed that one. I'm getting a bland message trying to download it that reads "unable to open file". I can't understand why I must download this file from a secure site, either, that's a strange one.

I did find a different program that only tests the data read speeds, which isn't what I am aiming for. Since the NIST site isn't working correctly, I'm still hunting...
