    Visual Source Safe Alternative

Does anyone know of an alternative version control package that will work with Microsoft Access, both 97 and XP? We're starting to hate the behavior of VSS in the 2002 environment, but I don't know of an alternative. Any suggestions?

I do not have any suggestions, but I have also been using VSS in the XP environment with Access 2002 and have also found some trouble. What problems did you have? My system sporadically loses the connection to VSS and the project disappears and will not enable me to reconnect.

We haven't experienced that at all. The difference in the VBE IDE means that the first time in a session that you open a module and try to check it out, you will get a long list of questions about checking out other modules, including forms and reports, which drives me nuts. Using Alt + F11 to get to the VBE bypasses some of that but I don't always remember to do it that way. I do like the fact that when you're compiling and need to deal with a problem in a particular object, it checks out on the fly without crashing Access, which is what used to happen with 97 and VSS 6.0a.

The big problem we've had is that sometimes a project will suddenly start crashing and throwing odd errors while you are developing and there is no cure except to dump whatever you have been working on and pull a new build out of VSS, losing any unchecked-in changes. The old one will be so corrupted you can't even get into the VBE and backups will not only fail but will show the same corruption, as will compacted out copies. So far VSS itself has been OK, so I suspect it is a combination of VSS and AXP that is the culprit. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>
