    Unknown Device (XP Pro/Fujitsu 7631-C)

In Device Manager under 'Non-Plug and Play Drivers' is a listed device 'Serial'. It has the yellow exclamation on the icon.

In it's 'Properties':<UL><LI>Device type: Non-Plug and Play Drivers<LI>Manufacturer: Unknown<LI>Location: Unknown<LI>Device status: This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)[/list]On the 'Driver' tab, the 'Service name:' and 'Display name:' are both 'Serial'. The driver details button indicates 'Serial.sys' in System32drivers folder from Microsoft file version 5.1.2600.1106 (sp1.020828-1920). There are no updates from either Microsoft or Fujitsu for this. 'Uninstall' leads back to the same situation.

Now, there isn't a problem - yet - but would like to stave off any if this could lead to one. Any ideas what exactly this is and how to resolve?

Re: Unknown Device (XP Pro/Fujitsu 7631-C)

I havd a situation like that because I removed an external Hard Drive without using " Safely Remove Hardware" feature. It left a yellow exclamation one of the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and I had to enable the stupid thing{ leaving a red x on it} to keep it from looking for drivers every time I booted up. And I can't get rid of it without hooking my External Hard Drive back up and useing the SRH feature. So for now I will just leave it enabled.

No real help Q310123: Explanation of Error Codes Generated by Divice Manager and searching the error yielded tons of diffuse information lots of threads, none I found specifically helpful. The KB says it means "update the driver" for a non plug and play device. And I bet you have updated drivers for all your plug and play devices. Update the driver to what non-plug and play device would be my question.

    Hi Bruce,
I had that exact same thing in my system list. While I can't give you the exact steps to take, I know I had to DISABLE the device in TWO locations within the pulldown screens for that item. After making them disabled, I was able to uninstall it OK and rebooted. The line was gone from the system list and no apparent problems afterwards. I have no idea where this came from in the first place but it's gone now. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Cowboy,
See my post to Bruce on getting rid of that item. Should work for you too. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

Re: Unknown Device (XP Pro/Fujitsu 7631-C)

I tried renaming 'Serial.sys' but that had no effect. The '(code 24)' in this case only provided the ineffective 'troubleshoot' button. I was a little reluctant to uninstall a legacy device and end up creating a problem where there is not really one yet, but I will and we'll see what happens.

Bruce, you may want to check your BIOS settings and disable any onboard devices that you're not using. I've run into this when flashing/resetting the BIOS on a PC before, which sometimes enables onboard audio etc.

    Hi, Mark ~

    Update:

Your suggestion was is probably right and the course of action I was going to follow, but after updating a PCI bus driver, indication of the serial device completely disappeared. Thanks!
