Need List of 'Advanced Appearance' Options

I wrote a few days ago about "System Fonts Vanish[ing]." Now I believe the fonts were OK, but somehow their attributes were changed. Though effectively blind, I poked around in the Display/Settings/Appearance/Advanced area and got SOME to show! (This is the area where you can change colors of menu bars, active window text, and all sorts of things--like making the scroll bar and shortcut icons near-microscopic (my present situation). So I can see file folder contents, shortcut labels and flyover text. I still can't see menu items, right-click menus, and, dropdown options such as, alas, the Advanced Appearance options.

(Skip this paragraph if you understand all this) Now that I can see file folder contents, I am pretty happy. I don't want to poke around again and lose that. There are six setting options--apparently interdependent/relational and based on cascading choices (pardon my redundance). For instance, if I use my arrow keys and count down to, say, the 5th option down in the first box, the rest of the boxes may or may not become active--such as size, bold-italics-attribute, foreground/background color, text color, and whatever the other boxes all do! So I could have "normal" text set at such a tiny or huge font that it would render certain areas unreadable. Or I could have text the same as background and I would just see, say, green boxes everywhere. And that's where I am. On this page (it effects some web page options) I see black rectangles and squares for maybe Show All Threads and Go.

Can I find a list of the Advanced Appearance options somewhere? Comprehensive documentation of ALL possibilities? The second row, first column choices must be fonts or something, because it is a very long list. Changing any one of the boxes limits or activates various other boxes. OR, come to think of it, if there is a RESET to Defaults feature I can invoke for all this--that would work. (Although I tried this in another related Display section, maybe Themes, and it made no difference). Even a boatload of screen shots of major portions of this area for XP would be SO appreciated. BTW, apparently System RESTORE functions don't effect this aspect of computing!

Re: Need List of 'Advanced Appearance' Options

What happens if you play around with the first two dropdown lists in the Appearance tab (the fourth tab) of Display Properties?
The first dropdown list has just two options: Window XP Style and Windows Classic.
The second dropdown list has different options depending on the selection in the first one. Olive, Standard/Blue and Silver are the default choices for XP, while there are some 20 options for Classic.
Ordinarily, selecting a style and a color scheme overrules all settings made in the Advanced dialog; in fact, the Windows XP styles ignore the advanced settings, I believe.

Hi, it's "Tal." Changing Themes did not affect this problem.
I sure wish I knew what caused this. I am a "tweaker" but lately have not done much, and I have great firewall and antivirus protection. It's like a bad prank.
Thanks for the suggestion anyway, but right now I could use a list!
BTW I have Compaq which supplies OEM Full Restore disks--I can't do a "partial" Windows XP reinstall. :-(

    Hi,

I hope that someone else can help you with this. I use a foreign language version of Windows, so lists or screenshots made by me wouldn't be much help to you. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>

I would certainly take foreign language text over this:

Can you read it? It's directions to the Fountain of Youth! In "my" screen font. <img src=/S/clever.gif border=0 alt=clever width=15 height=15>

I wonder if doing a System Restore would do any good. I know it's helped me out of a few situations like that.

Thanks, Cowboy, but I've tried so many (obvious & arcane) solutions it ain't funny!
I was banking on Restore--it helped me once before. But not this time.
I am really fuming that Compaq doesn't give Windows CDs (just OEM Full Reformat/Reinstall)

If you look at the first posting, under UserName "Tal," I listed the problems and fix attempts under something like "Vanishing System Fonts."

Re: Need List of 'Advanced Appearance' Options

Ok, here is a list of the items in the first dropdown list in the Advanced dialog, translated from Dutch back to English:

    3D Objects
    Active Title Bar
    Active Window Border
    Application Background
    Desktop
    Icon
    Icon Spacing (Horizontal)
    Icon Spacing (Vertical)
    Inactive Title Bar
    Inactive Window Border
    Menu
    Message Box
    Palette Title
    Scroll Bar
    Selected Items
    Title Bar Buttons
    Tool Tip (or Info Window?)
    Window

I have attached a screenshot of the dialog as it looks for "Active Title Bar". If you want screenshots for all items, you'll have to provide an e-mail address in a reply or in a PM to me, for the zip file is over 100 K.

Thank you Hans! Tremendous! What you posted will be very helpful. If you have other shots, or a list of that dropdown for "Lettertype," please send. I think the Lettertype and other lists change, based on the item being modified. Here is my e-mail.

Re: Need List of 'Advanced Appearance' Options

I have sent a large Word doc with screenshots for all elements of the Item dropdown box.
