XP hangs at startup (WIN XP Home )

After a recent crash, I repaired Windows XP but now when I start the system, everything works fine until the WELCOME SCREEN comes up - and everything just stops. I found that pressing CTRL, ALT and DEL will get things moving again and it finishes loading and everything is fine. I have disabled all unnecessary STARTUP ITEMS but still have the problem. Any suggestions?

    Try This:
Go to the start menu, go to settings > Control panel > go to users and passwords > click on advanced tab, and uncheck secure boot settings.
You might also read this if that does not work Here

    In XP? I don't see any of these but 'Control Panel'. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Hi Cowboy, I could not find the "users and passwords" category in Control Panel.

As Cowboy mentioned, the view of the Control Panel presents different options - the default is a simplified view. If you're using the classic view of Control Panel it will be listed as User Accounts.

    Hi, Mark ~

I don't see an 'Advanced' tab or any tabs in Classic or Category view. Is that only on domained machines?

No, it's actually only on Win2000 systems. The user accounts controls have been changed in XP.

Re: XP hangs at startup (WIN XP Home )

    Hello Mark and everyone else,

Ok - let me see if I can restate what is happening. The system is using WIN XP HOME EDITION - when the system starts, it gets to the WELCOME screen and then "hangs". Actually, there is a "beep" or some kind of sound when the WELCOME screen appears. Nothing happens until I press CTRL - ALT and DEL. Once they are pressed, the system finishes loading and everything works fine.

There are no LOCAL SECURITY OPTIONS in WIN XP HOME EDITION's control panel.

Thanks again for any and all help.

    Trebor,

Have you checked the Event Viewer? Look for events related to logon there and see if anything is being noted.

Trebor if you read my post above you will see where I said SORRY I was thinking of Win2000 Control Panel. The next post after that points you to some things you can try for WinXP, just click on the blue word Here above. The reason I am thinking It may be related to a Log On Issue is the fact that you can Log On useing CTRL - ALT and DEL.. If you were missing Boot Files I don't see how CTRL - ALT and DEL would do you any good, nor would it allow you to boot up. By the way when it gets to the Welcome Screen " what do you see"? Does it ask you for a password? If not when you press CTRL - ALT and DEL and it starts to load, does it ask for a password? Before it crashed and you did your repair how was the log on screen set up.

I don't believe that it does, because that's associated with domain logons, which aren't supported in Windows XP. The Group Policy Editor also is missing. If memory serves, all you can get with home is the Welcome screen, and you can't require CTRL+ALT+DEL to enable logon.
