    normal.dot (Word XP)

Where Oh where does my normal.dot live? I can find it easily in 2000 but not in XP

It depends on the Office version and on the operating system, I think. On my PC, with Windows XP Home and Office XP, Normal.dot is in Cocuments and Settings<username>Application DataMicrosoftTemplates, where <username> is my Windows login name.

    Re: normal.dot (Word XP)

Also, I think normal.dot is a hidden file in XP (stupid decision, that).

So you may need to change your folder preferences in the Explorer to show hidden and system files.

A search for Normal.dot may also fail if it's hidden. It may be easier to copy the path to the templates folder from "Tools > Options > File locations", copy/paste the path into the "File > Open" dialog, and append "/Normal.dot", .

    Klaus,

Normal.dot is not hidden on my PC (Windows XP Home SP-1, Office XP Pro SP-2), and I'm fairly sure that I haven't changed this myself. I don't think I ever looked at the Templates folder in my profile before Mike Mullett's question.

Mine is located in "Cocuments and Settings"Account name"Application DataMicrosoftTemplates" using Windows XP, and Office XP.

Also what is the path that listed in the "Tools, Options" and then "File Location" tab?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: normal.dot (Word XP)

I have read, but have not checked this out, that, in Word 2002, normal.dot is not created until you make some kind of modification that would be saved in normal.dot. i.e. that Word just uses the defaults until then.

    Phil,

I think that has always been the case, at least since Word 6 (under Windows 3.11): after a clean install, there is no Normal.dot.

    Re: normal.dot (Word XP)

If you delete Normal.dot and then restart Word 2002, Word 2002 will ask you if you wish to save a Normal.dot.
Of course, you can tell Word not to save that Normal.dot, in which case Word allows you to operate without a Normal.dot.

Same behavior in Word 95, so I would expect same in Word 97 and Word 2000, as well.

Was that question for me? It lists all important paths in Word, among them the path to the templates folder.
After you double-click in an entry, you can copy the path.

I had two users who told me their normal.dot was a hidden file; but it may well be they work in an office, and their local administrator decided they shouldn't see it <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

You may be correct, I have seen some IT support lock the users out of these files.

There are two path's in the "Files locations" for templates. You need to check both of them, User and Workgroup. The IT support have been known to reroute these to a server that they (IT) can control.

Wow, what responses! I wished I'd never asked. Seriously, Hans I found it in the location you listed but I'm now wondering why it never showed up on a search? My file is NOT hidden.

    Re: normal.dot (Word XP)

I'm sorry, no idea. On my PC, it did turn up - I wasn't exactly sure where Normal.dot was in XP, so I did a search when you posted your question...

    Re: normal.dot (Word XP)

Is it possible that you mistyped it when you searched? If you haven't rebooted since the original search, just press F3 & in the "named" box, click the dropdown. Another possibility is that normal.dot wasn't saved until after you searched. Gremlins?? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: normal.dot (Word XP)

Even though the file is not hidden, I suspect that the Application Data folder is hidden. This would cause a search to miss it unless you had specified hidden files and folders.
