Maximum Rows in a Table (Word 2K)

Is there a limit to the number of rows that a Word table can have? Thanks in advance for any assistance!!

No maximum number of rows is listed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 211489 - WD2000: Operating Parameter Limitations and Specifications. (Thanks to HansV for the link, in <post#=202803>post 202803</post#>.)

Bear in mind, though, that the longer the table, the slower Word runs. You also run a greater risk of document corruption. That said, I generated a 12 page table this morning with a report macro and Word didn't complain.

I have a 50 page document with a 3 column table. I found it advantage to break it into 2 tables to increase scrolling & redrawing speed. It's about a 1-1/2 years old with over 100 edits & no corruption---yet. But it's text only...no graphics & only one section break.

Definitely!

I'm just preparing a couple of books for print, with all the text in tables, and each book about 200 pages. I broke the tables up according to sub-chapters, which are usually shorter than a page, and have no problem with the performance.

With larger tables, it takes Word ages to do anything -- it can't even keep up with your typing.

There are some tricks to improve the performance. For example the tables should be set to fixed column widths, since "AutoFit Content" or "Autofit window" uses a lot of processing power.
But breaking large tables up in smaller tables is definitely the easiest and most effective way to speed things up.

In Word 2002, the maximum number of rows is 32767.

Hi Howard:
Are you sure? 32,767 is the maximum number of fonts in a Word 2000 document. It would be rather strange for that same number to be the maximum number of rows in a Word 2002 document.

That is not necessarily very strange, Phil. 32,767 = 2^15 - 1; it is the largest positive 16-bit integer. You will encounter this limit in all kinds of situations.

Yes, I'm sure.

32767 is a power of 2 minus 1.

Thanks to both you & Hans. Howard, where did you find this limitation for the number of rows? I can't find this documented anywhere. Thanks.

Not that I'll ever have a table that long in Word.

Re: Maximum Rows in a Table (Word 2K)

I had asked the same question a few months ago. Got pretty much the same answers then as what you're getting now. However, one additional piece of info I got then from Phil Rabichow suggested corruption started to come in around 2000 to 2500 rows. My wife is working on such a table and we think some of her problems that occurred recently may be due to the size. She's now at a little over 3000 rows.
