Prevent modify of worksheet (Excel 2000 SR-1)

I work for an attorney who has been required to hand over a worksheet by a court order. This worksheet contains formulas that the opposing counsel must be able to see. The attorney would like to find a way that they can see the formulas, but cannot edit or save the worksheet as a new one. I know that you can password protect the modify, but the opposing counsel could then just save it as a new copy and edit that copy. I am looking for a way to completely prevent the opposing counsel from modifying or resaving the worksheet, but would allow viewing the formulas in cells. Please help!!!! Thanks!

Worksheet and Workbook security in Excel is easily defeated with a little knowledge. Best I can suggest is to separately print the formulas and values to paper, have the papers notarized, and provide that as binding evidence of the state of the Workbook as delivered to opposing counsel.

    Ms. Friday,

John's right - You really can't send them a file if you don't want the other guys to mess with it. (I know, professional integrity of attorneys, etc.)

Print the spreadsheet formulas, or pass them through Adobe Acrobat. Don't forget to add a list of range names, if you have them in the file. (That goes like this: put the cursor in an open area of the spreadsheet, then click on Insert>Name>Paste, then select Paste List to place all the names with their ranges.)

You could try the Tools | Options |View | Window 'show formaulas' choice, resize the cells to make 'em all readable, then do the Shift / Edit 'Copy as picture' trick, paste the picture into a new worksheet and submit that.
    Uneditable, I claim.
There seems a limit on how big the copied as.. range can be, but you can do it in lumps, paste into the same new workbook, fix them together seamlessly ie same width, no gaps, and weld them together as a group.
Best of luck and I hope they find you not guilty!

    Hi GirlFriday,

If you lock all the cells then password-protect the worksheet, it becomes a browse-only worksheet that lets you see both the formulae and the results (provided you don't set the cell protection to hidden). If anyone copies any cell/cells from it and paste them into another worksheet, all they'll get is the formatting and results - the formulae aren't carried across.

While there are various ways of breaking worksheet protection, most attorneys wouldn't know how to do this and, being the ethical types they are, they wouldn't do it any way ....... would they!!

    Cheers

I hope you are in good health and have returned from the hospital emergency room after gagging on your last statement.

    Hi Howard,

Which part should I have gagged on - the issue of attorneys knowing how to break pswd protection, or their ethics? <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Hmm, wonder if Phil R's listening ... didn't get a bite out of him yet.

Well, what is the difference between an attorney and a cat?

One is a creature that will show you nothing but contempt, unless it gets its own way, the other is a furry household pet.
