    Icon switcharoo

I am getting a headache with my icons. They change themselves all the time. For instance, my zip files are suppose to look like yellow folders with a zipper, but when I go to them, they have changed. They may look like Spider or Freecell etc. Its like I have a gremlin in my PC!! Can ANYONE help me? What is happening. I am the only one who uses the PC.

I don't think you have a gremlin, just a corrupt icon cache. Windows caches the icons it displays and sometimes this happens. Click on the taskbar, press F3, and search for ShellIconCache. Then delete the file that is found (it's usually hidden). This will force Windows to rebuild the cache.

I did the search, said their was no results to dis play. I went and changed things so that my hidden files were displayed, searched again, no luck! And my icons are ALL wacky! What next?

OK. I tried that. Call me a coward, but a dialog warning box came up and said that editing or deleting the system files could make my PC inoperable! I need words of encouragement!!! HELP!

This is just a standard warning. Go ahead and display system files; there is absolutely no danger in that.

If you are using Windows Me you should find in in the Windows folder, that is where I find it on my Me partition <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Also you may find it if use the search (find) and look for "shell" with out the quotes.

Hi there fellow Lexingtonian (UNC) from one of the hated Lexingtonians (UK)... Get it? You won't if you're not a college basketball fan. No one here in The Lounge will ever get tired of a user who's trying hard to solve a problem, so keep at it! By the way, my file is in the Windows folder as Dave has already mentioned. If you still don't find it with Search, just open Windows Explorer and go into the Windows folder looking for it. If you STILL can't see it then you may not have your Folder Options set as you think you do.

Edited to add: And SEMPER FI, Mom!
