Windows 2000 upgrade from 98

We have a Toshiba Libretto 70CT Laptop that we want to upgrade to Windows 2000 Professional. However, it keeps crashing at the 'Installing Devices' stage of the Setup.

Is there any way to bypass this part of the installation and install Devices after the rest of the Install completes? Otherwise, we're stuck with a laptop without an OS?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It mught behoove you to check the vendor and the Hardware Compatibility List for this particular unit. Are you in the text portion of setup, or in the GUI mode? And are you running the upgrade from within Windows 98?

I have been assured by Toshiba that this Laptop should be upgradeable to Win2K, but there was a BIOS update available, which I've now installed . . .

No luck. The install crashed again. ***STOP: 0x0000007A (Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error
Beginning Dump of physical memory, etc.

Sigh. I'll try Toshiba again, unless anyone has any other ideas?

Thanks.

Toshiba now says that Win2K probably won't run on this Laptop, so . . .

I'll check the link as a matter of interest, but it looks like we're stuck with Win9x.

I don't know how hard you want to beat your head against this wall, but..... I have a work laptop (Gateway Solo 9300, PIII 600, 320 Meg RAM) that "originally" came with Win98 installed. The guy who had it before me wanted to put XP Pro on it and it kept crashing during the install. He did manage to get Win2000 Pro installed after GATEWAY told him they "don't support" XP on that model computer. When I got the laptop, I zapped the hard drive clean and installed XP Pro as a clean install, from the XP installation CD. It's been running wonderfully ever since. So, the Gateway semantics ("support") turn out to be important in this case! You never did say whether you're BOOTING from the CD to try the installation..... Can you backup what you currently need and try a clean install?

Re: Windows 2000 upgrade from 98

Well, Toshiba said that even if it were successful, there's no drivers for it, so now I wonder is it even worth the hassle?

As the hard drive has been setup as NTFS, I hold no hope for getting into the laptop to retrieve the Files on it.

I guess I may just try a clean install, but as I said, is it worth it if I can't get any drivers to work with it?

Yeah, I understand the drivers quandry, where Win2000 is concerned, fussy as it is. In my example, I was lucky with XP Pro - no outside drivers were needed - and video, touchpad, etc. all work just fine. Well, good luck to ya!

P.S. If you haven't already, you should see X2; it is the best movie I've ever seen. Absolutely phenomonal!

Cheers.
