If you link your Palm to the PC it keeps a backup of whats on your palm. This is most likley where someones going to look!!!

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

Hi, Rupert, my Palm is linked to my PC, and I have a backup (just had to do a full restore last week). But, I don't want that kind of information on my PC for security reasons, so I don't sync my Palm Notes to my PC.

My issue is, if I lose my Palm (or it is stolen) and someone finds it and starts poking around, although I have a few "controls" limiting the information (I use password "reminders" rather than the actual passwords) they may be able to get into some of my financial records and start transacting. I want that kind of information to be substantially secure on my Palm, and the products I listed are examples of products that do this.

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

John, I personally use LockBox because it uses a proprietary database format - thus making it more difficult to crack into even if there's a backup on the PC you're synching to. It's simple, to the point, and works without a hitch.

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

This looks really good, Mark. My only hesitation is that I don't see a synced-PC-side 'mirror' in the event the Palm gets reset and data has to be restored. Is the encrypted datafile backed up to PC as part of the sync backup process? (I'll download the eval., which will probably answer these questions, but thought I'd ask ...)

Since you're gonna go first, John, I'd appreciate it if you would report what you learn. I too keep sensitive info on my Palm AND I keep it sunch'd to the Palm Desktop software. I'm not sure if that's what you do or not. I have my sensitive stuff stored in MEMOS on both the Palm and Desktop software but I'd be willing to do whatever it takes to protect my PINs, credit card data and so on. Love to hear what you learn.....

    Watch this space!

My first disappointment with <!profile=WyllyWylly>WyllyWylly<!/profile>'s recommendation is that although the app is only 79k it requires an enhancement system called Booster, which appears to use about 800k! I only have 8Mb memory on my beat up Palm m105. So I removed it & installed SplashID, which is OK but not as strong in security; it has a desktop side, which I like.

    Palm Secure Data Products

With the proliferation of net portals to services of all kinds, I'm increasingly starting to keep financial service login IDs & passwords, and other confidential information, on my Palm, of a nature which could make me highly vulnerable to Identity Theft. I'd rather not use Palms' default security features as they seem to cast too wide a blanket over the entire installation. So I'm curious if other Palm Users use specific programs such as InfoSafe, Cloak, SplashID, Handmark PDA Safe ID, QuickID, etc., which ones you use, and what you think of them? (There seems to be a bunch of them!)

Yow, John, I think I goofed in my hurry to get the link posted. I don't use Booster, the LockBox I have is a freeware offering that uses RC4 encryption on the database. Try looking at this link instead.

Mark, definitely a different product, thanks for the redirect. I'll load it tomorrow, and run side-to-side with SplashID and QuickID. I certainly like QuickID's icon interface, but I'm very interested in the security of LockBox.

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

Al, I didn't answer part of your question. Normally I do NOT sync the Palm Memo files, so they do not appear in Outlook on my PC; every once in a while I Sync ONLY "Palm overrides PC" to update, then make move those Notes to a Subfolder and make an Archive of the Folder, delete the Folder and Notes in OL and hope nobody ever gets curious & opens the Archive. Not very secure, and very manual; when I recently had to reset and restore my Palm, I lost info on three or four new notes that I had not archived. Hence this thread!

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

Shame on me for failing to mention that this product, as far as I can tell, does NOT use a proprietary database format - but with encryption, I should think that it would be of little consequence. I'll be waiting to hear how it works out for you!

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

John, I wonder if shooting an email to the developer of the app would be worth the effort? I confess also that I've not looked at the backup on my machine (PC) to see if the data file is readable, but I gather that you have since you noted that all but categories are encrypted.

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

Mark, try not to laugh, but here is my process: go to the backup directory under Program FilesPalm, find the PDB(s) named the same as the security app, open them with Notebook and see how much is plain English. If my actual data isn't readable it's good enough for me; it means someone has to make a serious commitment to decrypting the PDB file, if they think it's worth the trouble.

I have already been thinking about dropping a line to CodeCubed about adding those fields. I took a look at the features in their Pro version to see what else is in it, the additional things that would be nice are Copy, Cut & Paste support, and Export to Memo, but it doesn't state if it has an improved field structure.

    Re: Palm Secure Data Products

Got a very pleasant, if vague, reply from CodeCubed:

i will consider adding the ability to add/customize available fields

He also commented that there is little difference between the $10 Pro version and the FreeWare version, and I have a feeling, guessing from his entire response, that he may add the Field features only to the Pro version to differentiate it better from the FreeWare version.

Wow, he was fast on the draw too. (How presumptuous of me to assume it's a he answering those emails.) I'm not laughing at all, the first thing I always try is a text editor to see what I can get out of it. Like you, I figure that if someone has to work harder to get at the information, it's a Good Thing.
