Moving Netscape 6.x from old PC to New PC (Netscape 6.x and 7.x)

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

My friend asked me to help him with moving data from an old Micron PC to a new Micron PC. The old PC is VERY old and it does not have any USBs to hook up a Zip Dive and do the job, so I elected to open both cases, hook up the two hard drives, old and new in the new case, and do the job.

    No problem, configured hardware, BIOS and everything was fine, UNTIL <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/ouch.gif border=0 alt=ouch width=15 height=15> we got to the Netscape stuff.

On the Old PC, Netscape 6.x sees all e-mails from 1999 to present.
On the New PC, Netscape 7.x sees only e-mails up to August 18th 2001.

So I concluded that I am not looking at the right files, and I thought they will be located in Program FilesNetscape 6.xUserxxx where xxx is the name of the user.

    So the following questions:

    1) Is there a migration utility that can do the job of combining the new installation of Netscape 7.x on with the old Netscape 6.x installation on the new PC?

    2) If 1 is No, how should I best approach this problem of Netscape hiding the files some place less than obvious and

    3) What files constitute the stuff that I need to move over? Mainly the e-mail folders, the bookmarks, the user preferences, and what have you.

    Thanks for any help.

I don't want this to get too long, so let me see what I can do. First, you didn't say, but is it (the new PC) a Windows XP machine? If it is, the Netscape 7 user profile is stored in Cocuments and Settingsuser nameApplication Data and you need to know for sure. When Netscape 7 is running, open Preferences and you can find out where the user profile is. If you had had Netscape 6 also INSTALLED, the installation process of version 7 would have automatically used the old profile. Now the quickest thing to do is manually copy the files from the OLD user profile to the new. Unfortunately, the Netscape folks have changed some of the file names slightly and that complicates things a bit. I don't have a machine here at home running Netscape, so I'm doing this the best I can from memory.

Bookmarks: I believe the old version is called BOOKMARK.HTML and the new version names it BOOKMARKS.HTML. If you copy the old to the new user profile directory and then change its name, it will work.

Address Book: Sorry, but I think you will have to EXPORT the address book from version 6 to a file called (filename).LDIF and then IMPORT that file into version 7. If I'm not mistaken, the actual address book file name changes also, from ABOOK.PAB to ABOOK.MAB and I don't believe you can just copy and rename, but it's worth a try.

Email: I don't know how his mail is "folderized" so here goes. In the old mail of the user profile, you need to copy all the files WITHOUT a file extension, such as INBOX, SENT, TRASH, etc. The files with an extension (I can't remember it) are the index files for sort order and so on, and the names have changed. You won't need the old - Netscape 7 will re-create the files, adding a .MSF extension to them.

    Too confusing?

Its not the length of the replies, its the content of them, and I do appreciate your time and effort in helping us all here. This is truly one of the best places to get help <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

Yes you guessed right, the new PC has Windows XP Pro, the old one has Windows 95.

We are moving files from old to new PCs, so installation is not what we have. Both software versions, Netscape 7.x and 6.x are already installed and now we need to make the new PC the working machine by moving all the data flies and then trash the old PC. If we had to install 7.x I am sure that the software would have taken care of all that conversion, but its two separate installations functioning as one.

Short of that, your suggestion of manually copying the files will be the way to go. <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15> for the names of the files, and their locations, I think this is exactly what I was looking for <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>.

How do I export the address book from version 6.x? I looked for a menu, and all I saw was an Import function which, I think, imports <font color=red>other</font color=red> e-mail accounts into Netscape <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

    Not confusing at all, but very methodical, and I love it <img src=/S/cloud9.gif border=0 alt=cloud9 width=25 height=23>.

Thanks a Million, oh how would I send you a Million, there is no smilie for it?

<hr>...How do I export the address book from version 6.x?...<hr>
Sorry, I should've been more specific on that one. You need to open the Address Book in Version 6 and from ITS menu structure you should find an export command. (Once again, I hope I've got that right from memory. I'm at home again and don't have NS 6 on one of my machines)

You can actually copy the old address book and then paste into the XXXX.slt folder for Netscape 7.0. Worked for me.
