End It All

A great utility for shutting everything off is EndItAll by Neil Rubenking. You can find it at:

I have found that it's best to shut everything off except systray & Explorer whenever you want to do any real housecleaning. That's especially true for:
scandisk
defrag
backups

and this utility is great for that.

I use EndItAll - it's great, especially when I need to close down everything prior to do a scan disk or disk defrag. However, you might want to also keep open any firewall software, especially if you have an "always on" internet connection like cable.

An alternative that I have found useful is to schedule a task to be "run-once" at next startup.

The simplest way to do this is to leave a .reg file on your desktop which you can click and merge. I used Xteq XSetup to create the attached sample file.

It seems to have disappeared from ZD Net's site. However, I searched Google
AptivaToolbox here.

Funny, I found under PC Magazine Extra, <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.zdnet.com/pcmextra/utils/current.htm>this link</A> a link to it, but when I tried to download it, I got a Page not Found message. They must have taken it off. I'd upload it, but the zip file is 392KB. If you can't find it, post back & I'll send it to you directly...it is free.
