Re: Includetext Field & Relative Paths (Word 2000/SR-3)

I'm jumping on the bandwagon a little late here, and I'm not sure if I shouldn't have started a new thread... but here's my question anyway . I have a similar situation with the relative path issue (porting to other drives, machines etc.) but with a fixed directory tree. So, for example, I might want to INCLUDEPICTURE of a graphic that lives in a directory called PICS, which is always below the directory in which the current .doc is resident. Is it possible to use some kind of relative path in this instance? e.g. PICSpicture.jpg

thanks

Alan

Many thanks. I'll have a play with it.

BTW, do you prefer to be referred to as macropod, or by your real name?
And don't tell me that is your real name - nobody's that absorbed in their field of expertise

I actually kicked myself after writing this. I was thinking "macros", then realised you're from Canberra. Then the "pod" bit kicked in, and I realised the name originated right here in my own backyard... and yes, we do get them in the backyard! I even looked up the official definition - apparently you're pretty good eating unless you're a black wallaroo.

Re: Update paths in INCLUDETEXT et al. (Word 2000/XP)

I've been following this thread with interest because I would like to the INCLUDE TEXT field code in our firm's letterhead. If I could make it work, I could update the letterhead in one place instead of changing all of the templates that use the letterhead. Unfortunately, we (a law firm) use Docs Open, so the file path would not stay the same. Do you have a suggestion regarding how I can work around this software interface?

Re: Update paths in INCLUDETEXT et al. (Word 2000/XP)

Hello Towana,

Any document using INCLUDETEXT needs the path to the source document, unless they are both kept in the original folder. I'm not familiar with Docs Open and I don't know why the path to the source wouldn't stay the same. Unless the path to the source is particulalrly volatile, the solution I posted should allow users to reconnect the target document with its INCLUDETEXT source (in your case the document with the letterhead) and have it remain linked.

Even so, you might need to re-consider what you're trying to achieve. If you use INCLUDETEXT to link to your letterhead, any documents prepared using the old letterhead are liable to be updated to the new version next time they are opened, which might not be what you'd want.

Cheers

Re: Update paths in INCLUDETEXT et al. (Word 2000/

Hi Towana:
Following up on macropod's suggestion. One way to be able to update letterhead templates quickly (when the logo changes e.g.) is to:
1. Have one source document for the letterhead
2. Use INCLUDETEXT fields for each of the letterhead templates.
3. Have an AutoNew macro in each of the letterhead templates that converts the INCLUDETEXT field to text as soon as you create the document. That way, a new document will have the correct letterhead. But once it's created, it will remain unchanged, which may be important in the legal setting.
Hope this helps,

Update paths in INCLUDETEXT et al. (Word 2000/XP)

Hi Alan,

You mean like the attached MKIII version? This lets you specify the field type and select the source folder. True relative paths are beyond its scope, though.

Cheers

Word Field External Link Updater: A Synopsis

When you create a link to an external file (eg another document or a picture) in Word, then move the source file, the link is liable to break. Then you'll get an error message in the field that does the linking, like:
"Error! Cannot open file."

The attached document has a macro for updating:
. HYPERLINK
. INCLUDETEXT
. INCLUDEPICTURE
. LINK and
. RD
field links.

You get to choose which type of link to update, and (now) a variety of options for choosing the new source folder(s). Also updated to handle Word's relative links.

More instructions on how to use the macro are in the document itself.
