    Font and Zoom (XP)

I'm moving up from 97. Using Arial or Courier TT fonts, when I reduce the zoom level the numbers are not longer evenly spaced. This makes things hard to read. Is there a fix?

    Thanks

I see that behavior in both Excel 97 and XP. I haven't used Excel 95 for years, but I think it occurred there too. Excel does not display fonts correctly on-screen for zoom percentages below 100% (even 99% makes character widths go haywire.)

    Re: Font and Zoom (XP)

That's strange. I've been using 97 and 95 before that (and Multiplan long before that --- but that was DOS and DOS didn't have those quirks). I have never seen this happen before. I've used 97 on at least 3 different computers, one of which is a laptop and I didn't see it on any of them.

I've simultaneously upgraded to a new computer and WXP and Office XP. Do you think this might be a video problem? Maybe there is something in these latest/greatest video cards that is causing it? There has got to be more on the subject. Have you searched the MSKB? Whenever I search it, I get lost.

    Thanks!

A (presumably) connected effect is the non-display of numerical values (##########) when zooming to a lower level, requiring resizing of columns. Like Hans, I have seen this behaviour for years in various versions of Excel.

    Re: Font and Zoom (XP)

I have looked in the MSKB and I have found nothing directly related to your problem.

I have attached a screenshot I just made in Excel 97. It shows two windows on the same worksheet with different zoom settings.

(I also have experienced the column width mentioned by Tony (BilasTasol) in all versions of Excel that I have used)

    Re: Font and Zoom (XP)

I still have 97 on my old Laptop and just for knowledge's sake, I'll paste the same screen shot's you did into my next post. Only trouble is that I don't have a clue how to copy or paste a screen shot. I'll be using W98 and XL97, when I do this.

    Thanks again guys!

Here's Leif's guide to posting <!post=Screen Shots,158453>Screen Shots<!/post>. Note that you can use also MS Paint (which I do, combined with IrfanView for basic image manipulation), instead of MS Photo Editor, or you can use other capable graphics applications, but you have to learn your way around MS Paint a little. There are more threads on the topic, but with Search disabled this is the best I can provide.

I'll give this a shot as soon as I get a little time. Got to do some "real" work now....

    Again..... Thanks to all!

If you use the font "courier" it should line things up visually. Other than that, not much of a choice.

I thought so too. Tried Courier, Courier New, FixedSystem, System.
No go with any of them.
    Oh well....

Here are images from my old laptop which runs W98SE and XL97. Everything lines up neatly . Have you seen this problem using W98? I'm thinking maybe it is an OS quirk.

    Re: Font and Zoom (XP)

I have never used Windows 98. I have tested the following combinations:

    Excel 97 SR-2 on Windows 95
    Excel 97 SR-2 on Windows NT4
Excel 2002 SP-2 on Windows XP Home SP-1
Excel 2002 SP-2 on Windows XP Pro SP-1

All on desktop PC's; all combinations show the behavior in the screenshot I posted <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>. Perhaps other Loungers can report what they see in other Office/Windows version combinations.

    Re: Font and Zoom (XP)

What intrigues me is that on the various PC's I use at work and at home, Excel seems to switch to a different kind of font if the zoom percentage is less than 100, whereas on hardworker's laptop, the fonts in the two windows are the same. The digit 2 illustrates this clearly. It doesn't look like a TrueType or OpenType font on my screen, it is much more pixelated. Word doesn't display this behavior, it just displays a smaller version of the same font. It's only the on-screen display, though. The printed version uses the TrueType/OpenType font.
