Curious about Woody's Lounge

With the suspension of the search abilities, which is apparently causing a burden on the site, I was drawn into

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

>>>>>Is there a history of Woody's<<<<<

Well all I can tell you is that I have been a lounger for about two years now. I read about Woody's Lounge somewhere, and came and had a look round, and decided that I wanted to be part of it. This is also the first bulletin board (and the only one) that I use!

The lounge I found was "new". But I did read somewhere in the lounge that there was a previous incarnation, but something terrible happen to it, a server went down or something and the whole thing was lost .

I also know that Woody is the Boss, and that the lounge is named after him (obviously). Also Eileen developed the software behind the lounge, and Eileen doesn't visit the lounge very much now because she has retired.

I understand that Charlotte is one of the longest standing moderators, and I believe she moderated the previous incarnation. Charlotte is a moderator of the Access board I may be a bit biased in mentioning Charlotte because the Access board is where I spend the majority of my time.

It did occur to me that I shouldn't be writing this because, well, I don't know! What I am writing is what I have inferred from things I read in various replies throughout the lounge. But then I thought there must be many people in the lounge like me who don't really know the history, but have inferred its history, so my comments aren't really an answer to your question but are here to demonstrate that my concept of the history of the lounge is inevitably, being formed based on fact and fiction! So it might benefit the lounge to publish its history somewhere!

I was gonna say this earlier today, but I got busy and forgot. I've only been a member for about a year and a half and I've heard the things that Rupert said. I can tell you that there is a little something in the Lounge's FAQ about what the software was originally and to where it has "morph'd."

Perhaps when things have stabilized (let's hope that it'll be soon), someone who has known the "Old Lounge" will be willing to tell more about the prehistory of the present Lounge. You can find bits and pieces in the oldest threads in Lounge Matters, for instance starting with Lex's announcement that he's back in <post#=2>post 2</post#> (The very first post <post#=1>post 1</post#> is in Words From On High)

Woody's "biography" can be found at Whooooo's Woody !?

I appreciate the replies to my curiosity. And I will also check out the links that are shared for information. I also appreciate the hard work that is done to keep this site up and running so very well. Just trying to keep my tiny web pages up to date is difficult enough for me. I cannot imagine what running something as complex as the Lounge could be like. Fun when it is working correctly and a major headache when it isn't!!

And I also want to add that my experiences with being able to access this site for information has always been pretty quick (I am on the old phone lines), the information given is great, and people involved with monitoring as well as participating, are super!!

I discovered the site through the books that I purchased over the years and as long as I am playing on computers, I will be buying books to keep up and reading the newsletters that come into my email box!

So anyway, whenever anyone else has time to share more info on how all of this got started, I am open for more of its history!!

Do a search at Google.com on Woody's Lounge and you will get:
"Searched English pages for "woody's lounge". Results 51 - 60 of about 789. Search took 0.20 seconds"

You will find many other sites referring back to "The Lounge", and even some of the web pages of some of the site members including MODs. You will find some interesting reading. Even Microsoft talks about "The Lounge" at several sites.

Just got finished reading Woody's Bio that Hans pointed me to as well as Posts 1 and 2. Eileen is one cool lady!!

And I will do as you suggest, DaveA. I have a feeling that I will find more then enough to keep me busy reading and enjoying my excursion into this topic for awhile!

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

Yup... I was around with the split frame too... I didn't even have to ask a question before I knew how great this place I stumbled on was. After I posted a few questions and a few answers I was hooked. And since I'm a writer... sit back and I'll tell you the story from as far back as I know it...

The split frame was cool because you could see the whole thread in threaded view on one side, pick a post and see that post in the other frame. Then, for some inexplicable reason... the url didn't work. and the whole world wept (OK... maybe that was just me... especially since I apparently had a numbering problem <post#=425>post 425</post#>) A single page replaced the old lounge asking for patience... so I checked back, nearly every day... (it was a little sad, I'll admit it, but you old timers can't say you didn't do it too!! )

And then.... there it was again!! Something... not quite what we had and not quite what we wound up with here. A few of us posted to say welcome back and as fast as it came, it was gone. (this explains the references to the "old, old lounge" the "old, new lounge" and what we have now... the "new lounge" ) Now at least we had hope that someone was working on getting the lounge back up. So we kept checking.

After what seemed like years (which was probably just months) this incarnation of the lounge was born (and stuck around thanks to Eileen... dubbed mummy since she's the birth mother of the lounge). Once the lounge was back up and a few of us hard-core junkies were gathered round the campfire, we made suggestions, debated certain aspects, played with mummy's tweaks and alerted her to any bugs or "features" as it were.

Those who were mods before were asked back and some of us who were at the right place at the right time and helped out with the growing pains were asked to join the ranks as well to watch over the growing number of new loungers and new boards.

And a few years later (years... whew...) here we are friends. WMVPs have been added, Star posts, numerous new smilies, new boards expanding on not only the technical aspect of what we're interested in but the aspect of community as well (see the lighter side). Personal stories have been shared and loungers have actually met! Heck, Mike (<!profile=MWolfman>MWolfman<!/profile>) and I plan on spending our October honeymoon in Sydney and hopefully will be able to meet some of you folks down under while we're there.

Hope you enjoyed!! I'm sure some of the others can add their own stories and we'll have a pretty good story going.

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

Thinking back, I started an access project in summer of 1997 was new to Office and desparately searching for help. I fortunately stumbled on the old lounge and it's been a great source of help, inspiration and fun ever since. When the old lounge disappeared there was a tremendous void in my favourites list. I sent numerous emails to Woody and watched the newletters intently waiting for its reincarnation. It was well worth the wait. Once can't praise the moderators enough. I'm particularly thankful to Eileen for creating the lounge itself and Charlotte who guided a rookie through the beginnings of a major Access project which still keeps me well fed and happy to this day. Although all traces of the old lounge seem to have circled the internet drain, I did find an archive copy of Woody's main site wopr.com on the June 1997 . It features an article on migrating to Office 97. Ah, memories.

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

I concur wholeheartedly with your assessment of the Lounge. I started back many years ago, probably somewhere around 1996 or 1997. I was asking a lot more questions than answering in those days. I was overwhelmed by the amount of knowledge & friendliness of the Lounge.

I loved the split frame, too. At some point, I think I recall a vote on whether to do away with it. I'm not sure if I'm confusing that with conversations that took place after the current Lounge was created. If I had my druthers, we'd have a split frame option now. It was so easy to keep track of what you had read & what you hadn't. Fortunately, with Avant Browser, I can accomplish almost the same thing.

Eileen really did a wonderful job with the old Lounge. Eventually, it started taking longer & longer to post or refresh pages, so I guess the decision was made to create a new Lounge. Unfortunately, during the interim, we lost all the old posts & some of the old posters. In particular, I miss Robin Trew. Robin was absolutely outstanding when it came to using Find/Replace. If it wasn't for Robin, I probably still wouldn't understand it.

I joined the new Lounge on December 22, 2000; I think it had just started, because I was checking almost every day. I was on a two week vacation & did nothing except visit the Lounge (talk about obsession) . Then one day in January or February, Eileen sent me a message telling me that I had more posts than anyone else to date. I think I had over 500, not sure. I wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad thing. She asked me if I wanted to be a mod, but I felt overwhelmed, so we agreed to an WMVP status (actually, at that time, it was called MVP, but Woody changed it later to avoid confusion with Microsoft MVPs).

Then Eileen announced she was retiring, but stayed around for awhile to break in another administrator. It wasn't Claude at the time, & I can't remember who it was (can't search right now either). Whoever it was also had to leave & Eileen came back, dispite some personal problems. She has really, really done wonders for this Lounge.

The current Lounge has really been much faster & has terrific features. Claude has done some amazing things. I know the search feature is currently disabled because the Lounge has grown so much. Considering everything here is free & there really is no advertising, except for Woody's ezines, which are also . Eventually, you can find his books listed, but I really don't know how he affords to keep this up. But I'm sure glad he does & I'm glad to be a part of it!!

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

I might note that several of the MODs, KTYorke, Charlotte, Claude, WebGenie, KEL Mark KB, Geoff Leif, Rory myself and a few others were all with the previous board, before Dec 2000. Then Charlotte myself and others, I can NOT remember, were with the older old "Split frame" lounge, which was about 1995/1997, maybe earlier.

Where is mummy when we need her, she will have the history of the lounge aswell as the WOPR site.

Just to fill in the gap - Ian Leacy was the admin in between Eileen and Claude.
I remember Robin Trew from the old old Lounge - I learned a lot from his posts, even though it took me hours to understand how some of his code worked!

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

The "old new" lounge was around for a matter of months. The old, old lounge got thrown out forever when the server it was on was sold,

I too liked the split frame version of the old, old lounge, although I managed with its predecessor quite nicely, thank you. I don't recall having moderators in the old days , only WMVPs ... and we all had to log in by chiseling our password in stone. I think Mummy was really the only mod, but my memory is failing as my hair gets grayer and my eyes dimmer.

The current version is by far the best of any of them, and our stalwart admins are still tweaking and improving.

Re: Curious about Woody's Lounge

I can't add much to what has been said.

I joined much later than Cahrlotte and Dave- but was there for the split version.

I think that after that disappeared, there was a short lived version, before the current incarnation appeared.

Probably most of the people who signed in early in this incarnation were people who missed the old one so much that they kept checking and checking until a new version appeared- A great Christmas present for December 2000.

I didn't come around until this version of the lounge, but I was there for opening week.

I remember I saw a link in one of the WOWs or WWWs I was, and still receive everyweek.

Let me tell you, I've found more answers searching the forums, than I've been able to help with. I've also seen more ideas here, than anyone person could dream of.
