    Turning Off Messenger

This is something I'm having difficulty testing out as I am unsure where to look for services in 98.

Someone I know is having big trouble with messenger pop ups (notably "Hi I'm Rachel, Hot & Horny" type stuff), just like I have. In Win XP & Win 2000 I can turn messenger off in services so no problem but he is running win98se and we can't find an equivalent of this.

Does anyone know how to disable messenger in win 98SE?

Ini Windows 98 there are no true services, and the Messenger service isn't present. What you're dealing with here is the Messenger chat client, confusingly named by Microsoft. Click on Start - Run and enter MSCONFIG, and then disable MSMSGS.EXE under the Startup tab - that should kill it.

Like Mark says, you may be confusing the various "Messenger" programs and services made by Microsoft.

I have NEVER heard of people getting the WinXP-type "Messenger Service Spam" on Win98. If you could post up an image, that would help tremendously.

In Win98 the equivalent service was called "WinPopup".
