Inserting Symbol crashes Word (Word 2002)

Every time -- I mean every single time -- I try to insert a symbol, Word crashes (and, of course wants to send an error report, and to recover my document and all sorts of other time-consuming things!). This is more than a little annoying. I would reload Word from scratch, except I've customized the toolbar and created some macros of my own that I would hate to lose. Anyone got any suggestions?

Have you tried Detect and Repair (in the Help menu)? This will try to correct problems without changing your settings.

I suggest that you take a look at Phil Rabichow's <!post=Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000),197827>Systematic Approach to Behavioral Problems in Word (Word 97/2000)<!/post> - it applies to Word 2002 too.

If you want to do a clean re-install, you can use the Save My Settings Wizard (Start | All Programs | Office Utilities) to store your office settings before you do so, and immediately afterwards (to a different file). That way, you will have copies of both sets of settings.

I, did too, have this problem... re-installing and/or fix/repair did not work... it ended up being a driver problem for my display... it was a brand new system and something was not working right (IBM with double monitor capability). Unfortunately, I am not wise in this topic, if you have a HelpDesk, you may ask them to come and have a peek at your video card! Hope this helps... trish

Unfortunately, I don't have a help desk. I'm one person at home working on my computer all by myself. No one to help (except this lounge, which has been pretty spectacular previously!).

I tried the fix/repair trick, but it didn't help. I have a Dell computer which was new at year-end. It had been working fine until lately. I'm constantly adding and removing stuff, so I have no idea which thing I've done screwed it up. I was hoping someone else knew what might be a likely culprit.

I'm very reluctant to reinstall MS Office in its entirety. I have too much important stuff that would be at risk. I guess I'll just have to live without symbols.

Before you live without being able to insert symbols, I'd go through the steps that are outlined in the post that Hans referred you to. If that doesn't work, the Save My Settings will do just that. And your work should not be at risk. You do make regular backups, don't you?

Well, I think I've tried everything. I went through the list of things in that post that Hans referred me to. Including deleting the data key in the registry. Since that didn't help, I uninstalled all of office and reinstalled it.

Word still crashes when I try to insert a symbol. I'm out of ideas.

Perhaps you have a corrupted font, especially the symbol font. There were some posts in the Lounge on that subject but, unfortunately, there is no search ability now.

    Sheryl :

Have you tried an alternative way of placing a symbol in Word - Character Map? Usually found at Start/Programs/Accessories/SystemTools (maybe different in XP - I don't have it). If this does work, make a note of the required Keystroke (bottom-right corner of Char. Map). Subsequently in Word you can just change to appropriate font and type the character - this can be 'autotext'ed for speed.

Re: Inserting Symbol crashes Word (Word 2002)

It seems to have been a font problem. I moved all my fonts (there were over 2,000 of them -- how they got to be so many, I'm not sure!). Anyhow, I put them all in a "holding" directory. Then I just moved back the necessary ones, plus a few I just liked. Now I can insert symbols! Thanks for the tip!
