Welcome Screen - Administrator disappears (XP Pro in workgroup)

When I make any custom local user account a member of the Administrators group, the Administrator account disappears from the Welcome Screen. I can switch to the Windows2000 style login screen and specify the Administrator user just fine, but I would rather use the Welcome Screen. Is there any way to keep the Administrator account visible even when there are other members in the Administrators group?

Xteq X-Setup can toggle the Administrator visibility for you (Startup/Shutdown | Startup | Windows NT/2K/XP | 31) Inside Lofin Window | Welcome Window ADMINISTRATOR visible). And TweakUI can toggle other individual users' visibility (find it in the Software forum, but no link while Search is awol.

The Administrator account can be added to the Welcome by using TweakUI from the Powertoys from MS.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You're right. And me too? I should have mentioned I was on Home, not Pro. I think with Home you have to first make Administrator "visible" with X-Setup, where with Pro it's already there. Then you can toggle it with TweakUI.

    Hi, Tim ~

In Pro, I modify the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows NT CurrentVersion Winlogon SpecialAccounts UserList 'Administrator' 'DWORD' value to '1' to make it appear on the Welcome Screen, but this does not work in Home.

Do you know how this is done in Home?

Don't remember the nuts & bolts of it, but it can be done, for what it's worth. What I do remember is that the Administrator account in Home is next to useless, except for its intended emergency use. It takes a bit of stuffing around to get the account to show at all. For more clues see threads <!post=The Invisible Administrator Account,217963 >The Invisible Administrator Account<!/post> and <!post=Administrator Password,203141 >Administrator Password<!/post>. I think there's another thread with the steps to make it visible, but can't find it without Search. (All this makes me think that I may have lied earlier in this thread?)

I also had a look at the code for the X-Setup plugin behind the toggle I mentioned above and it refers to the same reg key and value you use.

    Hi Tim ~

Those threads seem to support the idea that the Admin acct can only be invoked to the Welcome Screen in Pro only and that the only way in Home is to boot to safe mode.

I get the impression you have Home and see it at the Welcome Screen as well as in the User Accounts in the Control Panel - is this correct?

Re: Welcome Screen - Administrator disappears (XP Pro in workgroup)

No, and yes. When I first went from 98 to XP (& switched boxes) I went through all the hassle of digging out the Admin account. It was visible on the Welcome Screen (and User Accounts?), but as per referred threads it served no practical purpose (that was the thread I couldn't find). My erroneous theory was that if I could get at the account it would help me get around the worst of the crippled security facilities in Home. It didn't.

Then I had to repair/reinstall XP thanks to a shoddy "ghosted" install by the PC vendor (they used some late 2001 version but gave me the SP1 CD!). I didn't bother with the Admin account stuff this time around, so I'm no longer teased by seeing it daily.
