Backup Hardware (n/a)

Okay, so we are tired of having our Backup Exec fail and the tapes consistently having to be erased and retensioned. Any suggestions for Backup hardware and software? We currently use Backup Exec along with a Seagate tape storage device. We are backing up 3,909,426,452 bytes daily. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Unfortunately, you can't search The Lounge right now, but this is an oft discussed topic. Given the reliability and LOW prices of hard drives these days, it pays to use extra hard drives and some software product like PowerQuest's Drive Image. I'd get out of the tape business if I were you!

Drive imaging either to a separate hard drive or to a CD writer should definitely be something you consider. Tapes are expensive and break and are entirely sequential. Drives or CDs are faster and more flexible. Another possibility is a firewire drive and new back up software. I've used NovaDisk from http://www.novastor.com for a long time and had no problems with it. Depending on the OS you're running, you may even be able to use the backup software that comes with it to good effect.

We use OnStream tape drives and Veritas software. Even though thousands have cussed Onstream, we have only had 1 problem. That was the systems saying the tapes were bad. We ejected the tapes, put them back in and they worked.
