Format Cells, Telephone Number conversion (Excel XP, SP2)

Data exported from Oracle 8 into Excel. Selected the column, special, telephone number and the numbers did not automatically convert to (area code) telephone number. Double clicked in each cell and clicked out. The conversion was complete. Refresh the data only returned it to 10 digit number. Any clue?

Are they real numbers? They can't be text that LOOKS like a number. The Display format will only work for numbers.

If you have a column of text that looks like numbers and you want to convert:
Select the column data - text to columns, delimited, check no delimiters and finish. "text" numbers will be converted to real numbers and your format should work.
