Re: IE6 in Win98 (IE6)

I have had those same problems before when I was using Win98. So I installed Win98 over Win98 { Upgrade Option} All it does is replace the files thats missing. It won't mess with any of your existing Data are Settings { it will save them}. Then you can Upgrade IE to IE6 SP1. It's better then a clean install if you don't want to have to go thru all that stuff again. The thing I liked about that is it also fixed other problems at the same time. I have done it many times { even with WinXP} and never had any problems with loosing any Settings or Data. But as they always say, do it at your own risk. But I bet it would fix your problem.

Re: IE6 in Win98 (IE6)

Is there another new version for Win98? Where can I find Win98 {Upgrade Option}? If let say after I have install the upgrade one, will my modem connection which have username and password will still be there and others files as well? As I yet to do backup of all the files and i think i have to do backup first before i install the upgrade one. If really this is the only solution, I would like to try it out rather than just sit there with face..hehehee....So do let me know where or how can I find win98 (upgrade) ok?tks...

Re: IE6 in Win98 (IE6)

No what I mean is, when you put your Win98 CD in the Cd-Rom drive, when the window comes up it gives you two options. A Clean Install or an Upgrade. Choose Upgrade and it will load right over the top of the Win98 you already have installed. When it does it will replace any missing or corrupted files. There is however another upgrade to Win98, called Win98 2nd Edition. But for right now you need to use your full version of Win98. There also is a full version of Win98 2nd Edition but you will know if that is what you have because it says so on the front of the CD disk.
As for doing a backup of important data, it never hurts anything to have it just in case.I always keep backups. But I have never lost any of my settings doing what I am talking about.

Re: IE6 in Win98 (IE6)

Here is another option that will help you replace those files you have missin. This comes from Microsofts webb site.

SUMMARY
This article describes the System File Checker tool in Windows 98.
MORE INFORMATION
System File Checker checks for damaged or replaced system files, and then prompts you to replace any files that do not match the original Windows 98 files.

To start System File Checker, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, click System Information, and then click System File Checker on the Tools menu.
Click one of the following options:
Scan For Altered Files
Extract One File From Installation Disk { Your Win98 CD}

NOTE: If you click Extract One File From Installation Disk, you can specify the file you want to extract.

Click Settings, choose the configuration you want to use in System File Checker Settings, click OK, and then click Start.

Ah, I remember running into this on 98 more than once. Take a look at support article 221863 to clear up the message about rebooting. You may be able to uninstall after performing these steps.

Re: IE6 in Win98 (IE6)

I have tried use my Win98 but my Win98 doesnt pop up message either for me to choose clean or upgrade...its jsut a normal Win98 CD. This CD will allow to reinstall all the operation and others software. I also tried your second options and so far only 1 files being corrected. Nothing much changes. My IE6 still nothing changes.
