Excluding text selections from word count (2000/SP3)

Is there any way I can exclude selections of text from a word count in Word? I have some Chemistry equations etc in a practical writeup which aren't included in our word count limit.

I tried selecting text and using Tools, Language, and selecting "Do Not Check Spelling or Grammar" in the hope that might do the trick, but it doesn't work.

    Thanks in advance...

It is probably an onerous solution for you and others may have a better approach, but if you put the text you don't want counted into text boxes then Word will exclude it from the count.

Theo, I am running the same version of Word as you are and the easiest way to count only certai words is to select what you want counted, click on TOOLS and the select WORD COUNT. In Word 97, I had to do it the way someone else suggested to you. Word 2000 is much easier because "Word Count" is on the TOOLS menu.

Another way to accomplish this is to select the text that you don't want counted & make it hidden (Ctrl+Shift+H). Word doesn't count hidden text when using Word Count, even if the hidden text is showing. When you're done counting, you can change the font not to be hidden.

    Thanks, all.

My final solution is to hide all text I don't want counted, but permanently display and print it by selecting Show Hidden Text, in Tools, Options, View, and Print Hidden Text under Tools, Options, Print. That way I don't have to touch anything again, and word count is consistently correct.

    Thanks for the tips!
