Tooltips behind the taskbar (Windows XP SP1)

I often use the System Tray tooltip that pops up and displays the date when my mouse hovers over the time.
All of a sudden the System Tray tooltips have started popping up behind the taskbar <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> so I can only see the very edge of the yellow box

    Any suggestions?

    StuartR

Solved, by clearing and then setting "Keep the taskbar on top of other windows" but I'll leave the post here for future reference.

Re: Tooltips behind the taskbar (Windows XP SP1)

I know we can't search right now, Stuart, but a number of us have beat on this one at length and as far as I know, have never really come up with a solution. I think it's buried somewhere in the bowels of the XP code and SP1 didn't make any improvement in the problem. I too have the option checked as you mentioned, and it keeps coming back - the hiding problem, that is. Personally, I believe it has something to do with the screensaver routines, but I obviously can't prove that (or FIX it). Months ago, I think it was HLEWTON and I who were wrestling with it, and I turned off my screensaver for 5 or 6 days and relied on shutting off the monitor when I was going to be away or overnight. The tooltips NEVER "hid" on me during that time. I wish you good luck..... Keep us posted.....

Thats happen to me a few times and a restart seem to fix the problem. There does not seem to be a method to it's madness just happens. It may not happen again for months, but when it does I just do a restart and it seems to be fine. However I do agree with Doc, I think it has somthing to do with Screensavers. I have noticed that sence I quite using those busy body screensavers it hasn't done it again. Knock on wood.

I'm glad search is back, because this just happened again and I couldn't remember how to fix it till I found this note again.

Well, if it does rear its ugly head again, you might want to try my experiment (still in place) of setting screensaver to NONE. In my case I'm using Power Options to turn off the power to my monitor and even that has its little problems.

Unfortunately the (twice) impacted system has no screen saver. Another theory bites the dust.

This happened to me yet again today - and yet again I had to use search to find this post and remind me how to fix it!

I turned off my screen saver, but that didn't help. Clearing and then setting "Keep the taskbar on top of other Windows" sorted it though.

I think you'll find that that doesn't always work either Stuart. I have this setting, and yet a few times per week, all of the tooltips hide behind the taskbar.

Toggling the setting off and then on again always seems to clear the problem - since I only see this about once a year that is sufficient for me!

Re: Tooltips behind the taskbar (Windows XP SP1)

    Hi Stuart,
    Well since you brought back the topic I don't need to do a search <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

This annoyance has hit me every now and then, and I remember reading the threads at the time this was discussed. At that time I never thought that turning of screensaver would do any difference, and I don't think so now either. But, as discussed below, for obvious reasons the screensaver is shown above every window and that may mess with the windows order.

This demonstration is done with Taskbar stay on top checked (the default).

What we are looking at on the monitor is several layers of windows, a stack. I think everyone knows that you can for instance tell Task Manager to always stay on top (this is default behaviour for TM I think), and the TM window will stay at the top of the stack, well not exactly ...

If you drag the TM window, when set to "stay on top", down to the Taskbar you will find that it, as expected, covers the Taskbar; it is above Taskbar. Is TM now in the top layer? No, not exactly. If you move the TM window over the taskbar to the tray (notification area, whatever) you will find that even if TM is the active window you still can show tray tooltips ABOVE the TM window, see screenshot.

It is now clear that the tooltips from the Taskbar reside in a separate layer of windows, only for tooltips from the Taskbar! Now we can understand what has happen when the tooltips is displayed behind the Taskbar; the separate layer for Taskbar tooltips is not at the top of the stack.

The interesting thing is that, according to a comment by Raymond Chen at his blog The Old New Thing, this behaviour is connected to how many views Explorer remembers <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15>

Many Loungers uses the Tweak UI powertoy and know that there is a setting under Explorer (Customizations) that will allow them to change how many folder customizations Explorer will remember. This can certainly be done also with Regedit at the appropriate key, though Tweak UI is a more secure way.

It seems peculiar that the order of the always-on-top layers (Taskbar and Taskbar-tooltips) is included in Explorer's "memory bank" of views. But it may explain why this "behind-the-taskbar" thing happens intermittent and not so often for some people as for others; Explorer has lost the memory and the setting may be different between PC's.

So, Stuart I think your solution is correct. Clearing and re-setting "always on top" for the Taskbar puts the Taskbar layer/windows back at next to the top under the tooltips layer/windows. Actually, it happened to me when editing this post, after the screenshot, and I was at the end of edit. It does work. And no, I have not yet tried with changing the setting for Explorer views to some extremely high number. <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

Re: Tooltips behind the taskbar (Windows XP SP1)

Interesting. I have set the number of customizations that Explorer remembers to 5000, so perhaps that is why I have never experienced the problem of tooltips behind the taskbar...

Note: one should set this directly in the registry, for TweakUI XP is in error here. It creates a registry value named <code>"Bag MRU Size"</code>, it should be <code>"BagMRU Size"</code>.

Yes, veddy interesting indeed. Loungers should then be reminded of <big><!post=this StarPost.,252,256>this StarPost.<!/post></big>

Re: Tooltips behind the taskbar (Windows XP SP1)

Very interesting! I just checked, and found that I have two entries under WindowsShell. One is Bag MRU Size (that's set to 2000 , and the other's BagMRU Size (this is set to 5000). Note the space between Bag and MRU in the former entry; this is the value that is currently set in TweakUI. At some point in time, I may have created the BagMRU Size entry (probably forgot about it). Anyway, I haven't seen my ToolTips disappear in some time. So, which is responsible?

Re: Tooltips behind the taskbar (Windows XP SP1)

The setting, responsible (for stopping or delaying tooltip to disappear which is not confirmed, just a theory), would be "BagMRU Size" as Hans pointed out. I do not think that you have created the "BagMRU Size" entry, it is there by default.

The "Bag MRU Size" setting you find in the registry, that corresponds with what you find in Tweak UI, is a result of that you have used Tweak UI to set "Folders to remember" to 2000. Tweak UI creates a value that Windows does not seem to use. The values used (BagMRU Size) are placed in "...WindowsShell" and "...WindowsShellNoRoam". This is discussed as a bug in Tweak UI. As I posted to Hans, I stand corrected that Tweak UI is not more secure! With Regedit anyone also can make a quick backup.

Anyhow, I do not know if Explorer's "folders to remember"/customizations is connected to "behind-the-taskbar", but if it is we may still get reports from people who get no tooltips and we will not know how often they change their other folder customizations.

<hr>...do not know if Explorer's "folders to remember" ... is connected to "behind-the-taskbar" ... <hr>
I'm sure you're right. The StarPost I mentioned above was intended to fix the problem of Explorer "forgetting" settings and had that BagMRU as an added extra. The only thing I want to add for the possible benefit of Loungers searching these topics, is that I was one of the ones (maybe the loudest) claiming that turning off screensaver may have done the job. BUT, I also implemented the number of folders change around that same time, changing mine to 5,000. I haven't had the hiding problem since then and we don't know which of the two hacks did the job. Mine is "fixed" so I ain't gonna take a chance on "breaking" it again.
