    Goofy AutoCorrect Behavior (2000 SP-3)

One of the users at my office has an interesting problem with his AutoCorrect. Every other day, some of the AutoCorrects that he uses don't work. The AutoCorrect that he wants to use is the --> turning into an arrow. Some of the other AutoCorrects still work (like teh turning into the), but the :-) turning into an actual smilie doesn't. Yesterday it was fine, but it's "broken" again today. Has anyone seen this before?

    Thanks,
    Becky

The next time it doesn't work, have him look in Tools/AutoCorrect.../AutoCorrect tab & see if the smilie face & arrows are there in the AutoCorrect box. They're near the top. If they're not, perhaps he's the logon is to a different profile or using 2 different versions of Word with their own *.acl files. Do a search on the computer when it is & isn't working for *.acl files. Make sure the path, date, etc. is the same. If they are, then I don't know...unless he's doing something to check & uncheck the box under Tools/AutoCorrect.../AutoCorrect tab/Replace text as you type. I would look at that tab also.

The last time this happened, I did look at his AutoCorrects and the arrow and smilies were there. Replace text as you type was also selected. So there was nothing wrong with his settings that I could see. He does have a machine that originally had Office 97 installed and was upgraded to Office 2000. I believe that we removed 97 before installing 2000, but I can't remember for sure.

He does have 5 different acl files with dates ranging from 1999 to April 2003. Would it hurt anything to delete all of his acl files? Would Word recreate the standard autocorrects? He doesn't have any customized autocorrects, so I don't have to worry about losing any of his stuff.

    Thanks,
    Becky

    Hi Becky:
It ocurrs to me that I may have misled you. Formatted autocorrect entries, such as symbols & rich text, are contained in normal.dot, not in acl files. If there are no other customizations in normal.dot, rename it to normal.old & let Word recreate normal.dot. If there are customizations, he can copy macros, toolbars, styles, & autotext from the old normal.dot to the new one.
    Sorry for the confusion.

That makes a lot of sense. I was trying to figure out why some of the autocorrects would work (the text only ones) but the arrows and smilies wouldn't. Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it! <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>
