    Just a Question (2000)

I have a 97 database that needs to be brought up by people that have Access 2000. Here is my question - Why do some people when they bring up 97 in 2000 get a screen asking them if they want to convert or if they want to view and others get a message saying that the database was created in another version and won't let them bring the database up? Thanks for your help.

    Re: Just a Question (2000)

    Usually
In the situation where you have "Do you want to convert" , this is where the 2000 user is trying to open a 97 database.
The other afore mentioned "the database was created in another version " is usually a 97 user trying to open a 2000 or 2002 format database.

You might get this also trying to open a 97 - MDE, where 2000 can't convert.

If your users are all on 2000, make notes on the different formats and see if there's a pattern.

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Just a Question (2000)

The people who get, "Database created in another version", are using Access 2000. Everyone is opening up Access 2000 and then opening up the 97 database. Some get the screen with the option to view or convert and other just get the message, "database created in another version". It is really important that the Access 2000 when trying to open up Access 97 database, get the message. I can't understand why some get it and others don't.

    Am i right to say:

    1.All users are on A 2000
2.All users open the same 97 database
    3.Or, are there different databases

    Re: Just a Question (2000)

    Hi Linda,
Chances are your 2000 users who get the message that the database was created in a different version are trying to open the database when someone with 97 has it already open - another possibility is that if security is active, they don't have permission to convert the database. In any event, you want to get people moved to 2000 and convert as quickly as you can. In the interim, create a 2000 front-end and link to the 97 back-end. There are some performance issues and reliability concerns when operating in that mode, so you want to get converted pretty quickly. Check out our tutorial on splitting databases if you haven't created front-ends and back-ends. Good luck.

    Re: Just a Question (2000)

If a user tries to open an Access 97 database for the first time in Access 2000 (or 2002), the Convert or View dialog is shown. The option chosen by the user is stored somewhere, probably in the Windows Registry. If the Convert option was chosen, the dialog will be shown again next time. If the View option was chosen, the database will automatically be viewed next time, with a warning message. In that case, it is still possible to convert the database by selecting Tools | Database Utilities | Convert Database | To Current Access Database Version... (in Access 2000) or To Access 2000 Format... / To Access 2002 Format... (in Access 2002).
