messages on server are being downloaded again (6)

After working flawlessly for months, OE has suddenly decided to start downloading old (i.e. previously downloaded) messages from the server. Three days ago it plopped over 2000 messages into my inbox, going back to September. Ugh! Although this was a hassle, it seemed to work fine after this (i.e. it resumed only downloading new messages), but then today it attempted to do the same thing again. Luckily I managed to stop it before it downloaded everything, but now I'm unable to get my mail from the server without getting all the old messages again. Any suggestions?

Some background: I'm running Win XP Pro SP1, with the latest version of IE and OE. Win Update says that I've installed all critical updates.

I suppose I could solve this by unchecking the option to "leave copy of downloaded messages on the server" but I'd rather not do this because a) I like having them on the server as a backup and to facilitate access when I'm away from my computer and I download my messages onto two computers, one at the office and one at home; until this happened, OE was smart enough to download my messages in both places (i.e. I would end up with an identical message store in both places). I'd like to keep it that way, which seems to require continuing to leave the messages on the server.

Finally, the only thing that has changed lately is that I'm away from my usual workplace, accessing the server through wireless access to another network. I don't really see how/why this should prevent OE from seeing that messages on the server have been marked as downloaded, but if that is what's happening, any suggestions on how to fix?

    Many thanks for any help,
    Abe Zablocki

    Hi, Abe ~

As far as I knew, there was no way to configure OE6 to 'Leave a copy of messages on server' and download only new messages without receiving all your messages. If there is I would like to know just how that is accomplished.

However, I did find this MSKB 314578 article which may help:

    SYMPTOMS
In Outlook Express 5, if you receive Post Office Protocol (POP3) e-mail from an account that has a copy of messages left on the server, you may receive duplicate messages from the server each time you send and receive.

    CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Pop3uidl.dbx file is damaged.

    RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, rename the Pop3uidl.dbx file, and then restart Outlook Express. Follow these steps:

Click Exit on the File menu to quit Outlook Express

Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders

In the Search for files or folders named box, type Pop3uidl.dbx, and then click Search Now

Under Search Results, right-click the Pop3uidl.dbx file, and then click Rename

Type Pop3uidl.old, and then press ENTER

To start Outlook Express, click Start, point to Programs, and then click Outlook Express
Hi Bruce and Abe, I have always used telnet to access the server, particularly when on the move, or in a situation where my mail seems to be taking too long to download. I go into the server via Start<Run>telnet(space)mail.server name.com(space)port number. This launches me directly into the mail server where I can type in my user name, password, then "list" which lists the amount of my mail on the server & the size of each message. In telnet mode I can view a message, delete any messages I want and check the status of the mail server. Does this help? Get back if my post is not clear.

Re: messages on server are being downloaded again (6)

I can sympathise as this happened to me when I (temporarily) checked the 'leave messages on server for (3) days' because my machine had just got a new hard drive and until it was set up I didn't trust it!

However, my ISP (blueyonder) was doing some work on the email system and I found that every time they did maintenance/changes my emails all came through again, as you say happened to you. Unfortunately the only fix I found for this was to uncheck the 'leave messages ...' box!

If your ISP has been doing the same thing it may explain the sudden deluge, but I can't see how to guarantee it won't happen again, I'm afraid.

One suggestion, though - you say the messages went back to last September, so you obviously haven't set a limit on the time the server will keep the messages; setting the 'leave messages ...' to be for a set number of days would be a good idea, not only to limit the deluge if it happens again, but because ISPs usually set a limit on the quantity of messages they will store, and if you go over it you'll get all sorts of problems with them!
