    Installed font problems (XPP SP-1[removed])

This is the third time this has happened and each time seemed to have a different 'cause.' The occurence is a sudden, unwanted and unwarranted increase in the number of fonts installed in Windows. Though I use a lot of fonts in different jobs, I try to keep the number installed to a very low figure, adding any new ones wanted for the period it takes to do a job.

A type-setting job on its way to the printer's service bureau needed to have a font included with the file so I added it as insurance that it might not be handled correctly by Adobe PDF PrePress. Lo and behold, when I looked at the base artowrk again, XP informs me that it is substituting certain fonts. Examining the installed fonts, they had more than doubled in the quantity of faces represented, many fonts that I would never use and duplicates in TrueType of fonts installed as Type1. (duplicate installation renders both fonts unusable, by the way.]

My Only question is, has any other XP Pro user had this problem or anything similar. It's a very big deal because it basically involves uninstalling every font and then re-installing only the ones needed for basic functions. System restore doesn't seem to function for this problem.

I can't offer a solution to your problem, but I would suspect that one of your applications is being a bit too proactive in looking after it's interests.

A workaround could be to find and use a font manager program. It should allow you to store, and restore your base set of fonts, whenever the unknown culprit strikes. You could also create font sets to load and unload for specific tasks, to keep the currently installed number manageable.

You may care to trawl thru the Software forum, or use Google to hunt for suitable candidates. As a starter, I've played with three freebies, AMP Font VIewer by AMPSoft, X-Fonter by BlackSun Eclypse, and The Font Thing by Sue Fisher. The first two are in active development, the last, still in beta, hasn't changed for three years. Of course, I've found TFT the most flexible and effective out of the lot.

    Tim,

Well, I've got Bitstream's Font Navigator in place for that job. In fact, I've been considering uninstalling it! It's very handy, however, for the strategy of having very few fonts installed for day to day functions and sticking them in quickly when some variety is needed for a job that needs it.

    Hmmm.

I assume your Font Navigator is a current version. I tried it a while back (packaged with other stuff from Corel) but got rid of it because it caused grief. I don't specific problems, except that they caused the program to be filed in the bit bin. The version was NT & W2K compatible, but pre-dated XP so that may have been a factor. No idea whether this has any relevance to your situation, but thought it may be of interest anyway.

    Tim,

It is very much of interest and why I have been considering uninstalling it. It came with Corel Graphics Suite 11 which, as you doubtless know, is built for XP but it wouldn't surprise me if Font Navigator is NOT XP ready. That could be lagging and the cause of the other strange font problems.Corel claims they have not had complaints but I've heard that before.

I don't know what's goin' on with your problem either, Bill, but just to add a non-free ($35) choice to the ones Tim suggested..... I've been using MyFonts for a few years and had no problems with it. You might want to take a look in case you decide to switch. I don't "publish" as you do, but it is good to feel like you have control over the proliferation of fonts.....

    Al,

MyFonts looks like a good package. That Bitstream Font Navigator may very well be the source of the problems.
