    Cascading History (IE 6 SP-1)

    In many tweaking progs, there have been ways to put the History folder on the Start Menu (Win98SE) as a cascading folder. This has worked admirably up till IE6, where the item shows up, but is empty... even if the folder is not.

    Is there any way to put the History folder, cascading, on the Start Menu using IE6?

    If not, how come?

    Hi, Chuck ~

    You can put it on the start menu, but don't think you can do it cascading. You can, however, make a cascading history folder on your task bar.<UL><LI>Right-click taskbar > 'Toolbars' > 'New Toolbar...'<LI>Navigate to 'Cocuments and SettingsChuckLocal SettingsHistory'<LI>'OK'[/list]Then you will see 'History' with a small arrow to cascade the folders next to the system tray.

    The setting you noted, Bruce, is only applicable to Windows 2000/XP - the 9x family of OSs doesn't have the Documents and Settings branch of folders, which are for user specific settings in 2000/XP.

    Mark:

    I found what he meant, though, so it was a pojnt in the right direction...

    I just wish I knew why the "old" 5.5 version of setting it (like in X-Setup) can't work here too... and I'm not familiar enough with the registry to figure it all out...

    The following text is from an "attempted" reg entry to set up the History folder on the start meny:

    REGEDIT4

    ; *WARNING****************************************** ********************
    ; A plug-in has performed an action that can not be recorded
    ; Action: Create the directory "C:WINDOWSStart MenuHistory.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}"
    ; *WARNING****************************************** ********************

    ; *WARNING****************************************** ********************
    ; A plug-in has performed an action that can not be recorded
    ; Action: Write "UICLSID={7BD29E00-76C1-11CF-9DD0-00A0C9034933}" in Section ".ShellClassInfo" to file "C:WINDOWSStart MenuHistory.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}desktop.ini"
    ; *WARNING****************************************** ********************

    ; *WARNING****************************************** ********************

    But as I said, I really couldn't uderstand what was being attempted, so I couldn't figger what was not working...

    ARG!

    Re: Cascading History (IE 6 SP-1)

    Strange. That should work. The general concept is to create a Shortcut in the Start Menu folder. The Command line of the Shortcut should be History.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}. That is all you should need to do to make this work -- but I get a "file not found" error. So... did they change the CLSID of the History folder??

    You can do the same with your Control Panel, Printers folder, Recycle Bin, and a few others:
    Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
    Printers.{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}
    Recycle Bin.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

    HISTORY is supposed to be one of them. Something changed -- but what? Hmmmm....
    _______________

    No, the CLSID is the same. I cannot quickly find out what changed. I am surprised I have not heard of this before... <img src=/S/frown.gif border=0 alt=frown width=15 height=15>

    Re: Cascading History (IE 6 SP-1)

    Hi Chuck:
    If I open my start menu, create a new folder in it, & name it

    History.{FF393560-C2A7-11CF-BFF4-444553540000}

    the name immediately changes to History, takes on the History folder icon & becomes a cascading menu on the start menu. However, it's empty, so it's not the same folder.

    Re: Cascading History (IE 6 SP-1)

    DUH! It is a new folder, not a shortcut. I had forgotten. HOWEVER, History does not work the way it should regardless.

    I can ONLY get Printers and Control Panel to work correctly. All of the others in my list do not seem to Cascade.... However, I must point out, some of those I really don't use -- like Subscriptions.
