CD-ROM drives access (Win XP SP1)

When I put a CD in either my CD-ROM drive or my DVD/CD-RW drive and try to access it, Win XP can't find anything in the drive. However, when I open and close the drive then, Win XP sees the CD. Is there an easy solution to this annoying problem?
    thanks.

Re: CD-ROM drives access (Win XP SP1)

I'd try removing them both from Device Manger first, rebooting and letting Windows re-install the hardware. It's also possible that it's a cabling problem internally, if both devices share the same IDE cable to the mainboard. Yet another option is to look for driver updates to the IDE Bus Master installed on your system (Intel's "Application Accelerator" or Via's Hyperion drivers).
