Word Slow With Offline Network Drives (2002 SP1)

    Hi All

I'm running Word 2002 SP1 on Windows XP. I've got a few networked drives mapped that I've made available offline. The problem is that when my laptop (Pentium 4 with heaps of RAM) is not connected to the network, and I'm working on a document that normally resides on one of the offline folders, word frequently stops responding for periods of up to about 20 seconds. The problem is that this stoppage occurs every other minute or so. If it was 1 or 2 seconds every minute, I could live with that, but 20 seconds every 2 minutes gets really frustrating. It doesn't seem to affect other office programs - just word. I've checked task manager, and there's nothing kicking in that takes the resources. When I am connected to the network, everything works fine, so I'm convinced it has something to do with offline files. Any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing at this because I don't have Word 2002 & I'm not on a network. A couple things that might slow Word down:
    1. Go to the control panel & make sure Find Fast is not turned on or, if it is, disable it.
    2. Go to Outlook/Tools/Options.../Preferences tab/Journal Options.../ & turn off all journals.
    3. I'm wondering if you have any add-ins or something that keeps trying to check the network & pauses because it can't reach it. You can check for add-ins causing a problem by looking at <post#=197827>post 197827</post#>.
    Hope this helps,

    Thanks for your help Phil.

I don't use findfast and I have no Outlook journals enabled either. I'll investigate the add-ins, although I've added no word add-ins that I can think of - just a vanilla MS Office full install straight from the CD. I do however, have my normal.dot, workgroup templates and custom dictionary on one of the offline folders - I'll also have a look at this too.
    Again, thanks for your assistance.

Normal.dot should be in the user templates folder which is specified under Tools/Options/File Locations. Is that where your normal.dot is?

    Hi Phil

The normal.dot file is in the location specified under tools/options.

I did a lot of trial and error stuff and eventually found the solution - I had a network printer defined as my default printer. As soon as I removed the printer, Word started to work fine. I was alerted to this when Outlook "froze" after I (accidentally) hovered my mouse over the Print button.

Thanks for your help with this problem.
