    The lounge is moving

As indicated in <!post=this post,250092>this post<!/post>, the lounge has become too popular to remain in it's current location, it is putting a huge strain on the server. We are currently looking for alternative solutions, but, chances are that the lounge may need to move to another domain. This would mean that all loungers will lose the lounge cookies.

As a direct consequence, the first time you log into the lounge in its new location, you will be asked for your username and password.

I get some 20 to 30 emails a day from people requesting their username and / or password. For privacy reasons, not even I have access to user passwords. They (the passwords) are stored in an encrypted form. There is a password recovery system, however, that means you need to know your username, and, your email address supplied to the lounge must be current and correct.

Could all loungers please check their profile and ensure that the email is correct and also ensure that you know your password.
    Cheers, Claude.

    Re: The lounge is moving

Are you able to give any idea of <big>when</big> this move might take place?

Such as "during the first two weeks of June" or "at 07:00 UTC precisely on Wednesday 29th May"?

    Or do you know just how long a piece of string actually is? <img src=/S/boxedin.gif border=0 alt=boxedin width=25 height=20> <img src=/S/duck.gif border=0 alt=duck width=23 height=23> <img src=/S/hiding.gif border=0 alt=hiding width=70 height=24>
    <font face="Script MT Bold"><font color=blue><big><big>John</big></big></font color=blue></font face=script>

    Ita, esto, quidcumque...

    Re: The lounge is moving

It's a matter of finding a suitable host, up until a few hours agom we thought we were just about ready to move, alas, technical problems interferred and we're way back down the ladder. The problem is to find a reliable, responsive, not too restrictive and not too expensive host. Otherwise, we'll have to start charging an admission fee <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

In any case, there will be at least three days notice.

As for the string, it is exactly that long. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>
    Cheers, Claude.

    Re: The lounge is moving

If things get truly desperate I'm sure we could cope with a discreet mention of, and a link to, our new beneficiary on the front page. That's assuming that the prestige of hosting the Lounge is somehow inadequate. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Suggest checking with These guys. I'm using them as web host. And they can't be all bad, I found them as advertisers on Woody's newsletters!

    Re: Cookies as lounge moves

I am an instructor who has relied on getting back to past threads that I have been involved in to help me through a topic that has resurfaced...as we all know we can't remember everything all the time....when you say "cookies" that we will lose, do you mean the threads that we can review (after clicking our login name) that we have posted in the past...these ALL will beGONE????
Is there anyway to get to these past conversations before you move and save the most important ones (which I know I should have done all along, but hey this was just so darn convenient).
I feel like I'm losing a very large File cabinet...and my hand got slammed in the drawer trying to retrieve the valuable information inside it....

    Re: Cookies as lounge moves

Because the Lounge would move to a new URL, the original cookie(s) will not work. You - and everyone else - will need to Log In in exactly the same way as if you accessed this Lounge from a computer you had never used before.
You will still be you after the move - all that info is referenced to your profile.

The point Claude is making is that if you need to Log In, you will need your password. If you forget or lose your password, there is a mechanism to apply for a new one that sends a replacement password to your registered email address. If that is incorrect, you will never receive it and will never be able to Log In as you again. Just check your profile is showing a correct email address for you (the one that is described as being for admin purposes and not available to other users) and everything will be alllllllllllllllllllllllright. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Re: Cookies as lounge moves

With regard to lost Log In and Password, I always enter the lounge directly using the URL:

    http://www.wopr.com/cgi-bin/w3t/start_page...rd&option=Login

Pretty hard to lose a password this way, except for losing the URL/ Favorite of course <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.

    Re: Cookies as lounge moves

    Claude,
When you say that we will be given "3 days' notice," will that be in the form of a message here in the lounge or via a mass e-mail to all the members? Just wandering.

    Re: Cookies as lounge moves

Assume it is an announcement here in the Lounge - a lot less strain on the internet than sending out 14,000+ emails!

<big>Don't worry!</big> - you will not lose us!

There will be an automatic link to the new URL after we have moved, much as you get if you click here:

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by skitterbug on 15-May-03 09:36. I decided I didn't like my choice of expression for my discription of "cost" since this "lounge" is read worldwide, so I changed it! )</P>I am guessing then that when you complete this move, we will be redirected to the new web address via the old web page?

You know what? I would be willing to pay to access our lounge. (Unless it costs a fortune but even then it would be worth it!!)

    Good luck in the transition!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Hummmm, it has been very quiet lately - How is the search for a "new home" coming? Any new information to toss out about the progress you are making?? Yep, I am just curious <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

    Re: The lounge is moving

It's now almost three weeks since the last chat about this.

What news about when we move? I am finding it really difficult to research anything as this service is invaluable and now it's gone we really know how much.
